Absolute phrases

An absolute phrase modifies a whole sentence rather than a word or part of a sentence. It usually consists of a noun or pronoun plus a participle or participial phrase.

The line being all the way around the block, we decided to see the movie tomorrow.

Absolute words (such as perfect, dead, unique, and infinite) are adjectives or adverbs that cannot logically be compared (used with more, most, less, or least). However, the comparative or superlative forms are sometimes used in informal writing.
