Freewriting is a method of getting ideas onto paper or the monitor screen without having to worry about structure or mechanical correctness. To free-write, simply write (nonstop, if possible) everything that comes into your mind for ten or fifteen minutes. Do not worry about continuity or coherence; just keep going. If you get stuck, write the same word over and over until a new thought or direction strikes you. At the end of a freewriting session, you should have a page or two of prose, in which you may find at least one or two ideas interesting enough to develop for a writing assignment.

As well as helping to generate ideas, freewriting is often used in writing journal entries and first drafts of papers. (See also the Composing Process.)
