Headings tell the reader where the major sections and subsections of a document begin and end. They also identify the content that follows them. Headings at the same level should be in the same style and size of type and should be grammatically consistent (see parallel structure). Formats for headings may depend on the requirements of an instructor, on formal specifications from a customer or employer, or on the field in which the document is being written.
