People suffering from backache are usually in great pain and try out various methods to relieve this pain. Among other methods there is also chiropractic treatment but they don~t approach it first most thinking that they would have to undergo further pain to relieve their backache. But when other methods give no results people finally turn to chiropractic treatment and finds themselves pleasantly surprised with a treatment that is not as painful as they thought. In chiropractic treatment the chiropractor tackles your whole body rather than just the spinal cord.
Usually the first visit is replete with questions he has to ask to ascertain the best mode of treatment, medical conditions, symptoms etc. As is normal, there are forms to fill here too. While the doctor generally reviews the forms prior to your meeting him, there may be additional questions to establish the current medical problem. Some of these may be:
When did your pain start?
Where is the pain located?
What induces and what reduces the pain?
Is it the result of an injury?
This is followed by a through medical examination which is quite detailed. This is not your run of the mill process but here besides the regular such as blood pressure, pulse and temperature there would be neurological and orthopedic examinations of the body part having pain. Like in the case of spine these tests would be done for the spine. You would also be checked up for muscle tone, motion and strength in the painful region. The doctor could have other chiropractic tests done to arrive at the diagnosis. But don~t worry these are essential to take the right decision.
Once the problem is understood, the chiropractor will determine ifThe condition will respond to chiropractic care. He/She will explain the condition from which you are suffering and the chiropractic treatment plan that will be used as well as how long these treatments may take. The frequency of visits varies you may only need one treatment or your condition may require regular treatment such as 2 or 3 times per week over a period of weeks or even months. The seriousness of your condition or the amount of pain you are in determines this frequency of chiropractic care. The intent is to lessen the pain so that you can perform your normal daily routine and to stabilize your problem.
After this has been done, the chiropractor will proceed to do the first treatment. Depending on the nature of your problem, you will probably need what is called an adjustment. This refers to specific manipulation of vertebrae that have abnormal movements or fail to move at all. He/She may use the hands to do this manipulation or a small device to apply pressure to any areas of the spine that are out of alignment. Under normal circumstances, there is little or no pain associated with an adjustment. It may hurt or cause minor discomfort for a few seconds.
In chiropractic treatment the X-rays and MRI ' s are important to gauge the true condition of the patient on the inside. If you have any old scans etc please do show them to the concerned doctor.
Popularity of chiropractic is established by the fact that most insurance companies cover this as routine medical care. While it is best to call up and confirm, the chiropractic offices may also find out your coverage for you.
Many who go to a chiropractor once get such relief, that for future problems they go to the chiropractor first.
