Education Degrees essay

Earning degrees is basically a status symbol in the United States and the more degrees you have the smarter you are, happier are, and more successful, or at least that is the myth. However, this is not necessarily the case. There are many different types of degrees that range from a high school degree, two year degree, college degree, master's degree, and doctoral degree.

A high school degree is the basic achievement for most Americans and fortunately the drop out level is lower this day and age than it was many years ago when kids were required to help their family's farm. Also, the majority of jobs require a high school degree to even apply, so those without this degree find later in life they need to get their GED or else be unemployed. Because of this, most Americans realize the importance of a high school degree. After the high school degree is the community college or two year degree. These are actually very useful degrees because they are completed in little time and offer good earnings potential. Individuals with two year degrees often continue their studies at the university level or else have a technical degree like mechanics, laser technology, transcription and other similar trades.

Next is the two year community college degree. These degrees are very affordable and completed in a short period of time. Generally, community college degrees are trade degrees like cosmetology, dental hygiene, mechanic, transcriptions, truck driver, and the like. Many individuals with a two year degree end up continuing their studies as well at the university level.

A university degree is a four year degree at an institution of higher learning. Here students can major and minor in a variety of subjects and get a basis of understanding for many topics. Also, a university degree is required for any further studies so individuals wishing to be a doctor, lawyer, or have an MBA must get a bachelors degree first. A master's degree includes an additional two years of full time study and individuals can receive a master's in any range of subjects. An MBA is one of the more popular master's degrees because it has a high earning potential without many years of studying. Those with masters degrees can teach at the community college level and can find jobs in management as well.

Doctoral degrees include more years of studying and preparation. During this time more critical thinking is assigned to the student and more hands on activities are engaged in. This is because this is the highest level of education and all of the final stages are taught during this time frame in order to prepare the student for the world of work. Doctoral degrees are available in any subject as well as medicine, pharmacy, and others.

While most people get a high school degree, only a percentage of those go onto get a college degree, followed by an even smaller percentage receiving masters degree, and even less with doctorates. This is because studying costs a lot of money as well as time, and most people want to start the earning process as quickly as possible. Although, those individuals that study for 10 years for their doctorate degrees do end up making it up on the back end with very high salaries.
