Before making posters the maker must have a clear idea and picture to express the products or the services that he is going to sell through his posters. Posters must be attractive in first place so that it attracts attention of passer by. Secondly it must be simple and clear enough to let the onlooker comprehend it in one go. For these to happen, bold and bright colors are used and catchy tag lines are made. Minimum numbers of words are used.

Poster designing was at its peak in the 19th and 20 th century when people took it up as a hobby besides their other work. These two centuries have given some renowned poster designers to England , America and the rest of the world. Fred Walker, James Pride and William Nicholson are the famous poster designers of England . These designers made posters that were highly inspired by the East Asian prints. America saw its first poster in the form of advertisement of Matt Morgan's circus in 1890. It was designed by many designers; few among them were Edward Penfield, Howard Chandler and Harrison Fisher. Political posters saw all time high during the two world wars.

In some parts of the worlds like India and Latin America posters are used for education. In United States of America posters are the part of interior decoration. Collecting movie posters is an interesting hobby and is enjoyed by many.
