The Many Uses Of Kites essay

Kites aren't simply toys, though they make good ones; they have various uses. Kites were used for photography and meteorology in the 19th and early 20th centuries before the aircrafts, balloons and rockets started doing that.

Kites were used in Marconi's early radio experiments and also in World War II. Airmen were provided a box kit and transmitter along with a rubber dinghy. Some kites were used for anti-aircraft target practice and to deter enemy aircraft. Kites are still used by some radio hams.

Kites were used for military signaling in China in the sixth and eighth centuries. In 1232, kites were released over enemy lines, bearing messages to prisoners inciting them to revolt. Leaflets were dropped from kites in the Peninsular War, and the American Civil War, and in the latter, kites were used as a form of airmail between Maryland and Virginia .

China used kites with loud noise-makers attached to them to drive game. During the 19th century, kites resembled birds of prey in England and France for hunting grouse and partridge.

It's been reported that a kite was used to carry the first line across the Niagara River when building a bridge from New York to Canada . Kites have also been used to carry telephone wires.

Apart from the military uses of kites, many flat and bowed kites lend themselves to decoration. The Artistic Kite Group promotes kites as an art form. Kites have been used for centuries in the East for fishing. Lowering your hook and bait from a kite can have two advantages over casting: you may be able to get it further or into places you couldn't otherwise reach, and you can lower it gently, so avoiding a loud 'plop', which might frighten off the very fish you wanted to catch.

The art of training falcons and hawks to hunt is very ancient and breathtaking to watch. Some falcons fly at heights up to 1000 feet but many never bother flying over 200 ft . By attaching bait to a high-flying kite, you can train it to fly higher than 200 feet .

Flying a kite can help you relax, provide some exercise and a bit of fresh air.
Today, kites are used in the sports of kite-bugging, kite-sailing, kite-surfing and kite-skiing. There are two kinds of kite races, the upwind and the downwind kite races. In the upwind kite race, contestants have to drag strong-pulling kites upwind. This is purely a test of strength. In the downwind kite race, each contestant launches his kite and runs downwind, without allowing his kite to touch the ground. This is more a test of skill.
