Standard Definition Movie DVDs These types of DVDs have movie format and use MPEG-2 compression. They can store video of length 2 hours, on each side. The video has the standard definition TV resolution. DVD video disc is commonly called just DVD by the people.

High Definition Movie DVDs HD DVD also has the capacity to store the two hour long movie having high definition resolution.

Read Only DVD ROMs store large audio and video data. They are manufactured just like CD ROM.

Writable/Recordable DVDs are similar to removable disk in terms of function. You can write 100,000 times on DVD-RAM before it becomes unusable.

Music DVDs
They are second generation digital music format. Audio DVDs have better sampling rates in comparison to audio CDs. This format is used as it captures the entire sound spectrum unlike audio CD. You can visually determine the capacity of DVD-ROM by merely seeing the number of data sides and the sides of the disc. Double-layered sides are colored in gold unlike single layered that have silver color on them. The other way to make out whether the DVD is single or double layered is to note the center ring present at the underside of the DVD. Presence of two barcodes state that the DVD is double layered whereas presence of just one barcode reveals that the DVD has only one layer.

DVDs can have multi channels of audio along with the video data. In some DVDs sound tracks recorded in many languages are present. As there can be many audio channels in a DVD, many cables would be required to connect the DVD with the amplifier and the Television. This could be annoying sometimes. To overcome this problem many DVDs have digital connector with them.
