Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (1934-1968), a Soviet air force pilot, was the first human to travel in space. The Soviet cosmonaut circled the earth on April 12, 1961, at a speed of more than 27,400 kph. From blastoff to landing, his trip around the earth lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes. His spacecraft Vostok-1 was in orbit for 89.1 minutes. At the highest point, Gagarin was about 327 kilometers above the earth. He was killed in a plane crash in 1968.

Gagarin was born near Gzhatsk west of Moscow, in the family of a farmer. He was only 6, when the war began. He was a little boy, when he went through all the horrors of war. During the occupation, his brother was executed in Yuri's eyes.

Gagarin studied at school very well, and graduated form it successfully. After school he studied at the Academy of Zhukovsky.

On April 12, 1961, the news about the space flight of the Soviet cosmonaut immediately flew over the world. It was the victory of the Soviet Union, the Soviet science, and many of the Soviet engineers and workers.
