I would like to discuss media from the interesting perspective in this paper. According to Marshall McLuhan (1964, p.284) we see the next formulation of media definition: “All media are fragments of ourselves extended into the public domain.” This claim has a disputable character, but I want to agree with it, because it reflects my position. Thus, I would like to explain why I like this claim and use a newspaper as an instance of media form.
The media play a very important role in our lives. It informs people about the various events that occur or may occur. The media also entertain people and help make their lives better. But most importantly thing, that newspapers, radio and television brought to people – is information.
Nowadays it is very important to obtain complete and accurate information. Those TV programs, radio broadcasts and newspapers, which provide reliable information, are always popular. Sensational events, such as crime, natural disaster or unusual event is always very interesting. That’s why many newspapers and television programs talk about them, along with serious information. Typically, the daily media, such as newspapers, talk about the international, state, or local news. It also covers such topics as health, art and others. Many newspapers have articles which contain different recommendations, summaries of books, comics, crosswords and other necessary information. Most of them have different photos, illustrations and pictures. The media have also attracted public attention to the most urgent problems in society. It could be health, education, transport, or even corruption in government circles. Much attention is paid to media advertising. It helps people to orient in a variety of companies and stores that offer their products and services. In general, the media help us to form our opinions on various events that provide us with information about what is happening in society, as well as media could be the mean of entertainment.
From the above presented information we understand that every person needs information everyday. It is possible to receive information from different sources and newspaper is one of them. Symbolically generalized media form – is a symbol that has meaning, which is transmitted in the communication and provides the probability of its positive outcome. Agreeing with the claim that “all media are fragments of ourselves,” I think that every media form has its assignment and, for example, newspaper is directed on concrete category of people.
Media often reflects our reality and media theory is a theory about everything that is around us and inside us. We can’t understand surrounding reality without information about it and that is why according to McLuhan & Lapham (1994), “Any understanding of social and cultural change is impossible without a knowledge of the way media work as environments.” Newspapers give information about daily, weekly, monthly news and all articles are written by people who describe different events from real and virtual life with own comments. I believe that “all media are fragments of ourselves” due the wide character of media and its place in our life. When we read newspaper we often could find our reaction on some events in author’s words and in such a way newspaper as a media form reflects our own internal world, thoughts and theories.
To sum up, I would like to say that I explained my position towards media in this paper and also explained why I agreed with McLuhan’s statement.
