Abstract
Undoubtedly, relations between Christianity and Islam constitute an essential issue high on the agenda of the present-day world. The USA is no exception in this regard, as both religions have been present in its territory since times immemorial and both have been instrumental in the establishment and development of its state tradition, as well as its cultural diversity and integrity.
The status of Muslim women in society –is not a new issue and has not been fully settled. Attitudes towards women’s rights – this issue is studied for many centuries, throughout the history of human relations women were treated differently: it depended on the culture, religion, philosophy of certain period. In some countries, women were worshiped, their beauty was praised and sung, men devoted poems to women. In other countries, men treated women worse, they were considered just as housewives.
Nowadays women all over the world have equal with men rights. The position of Islam is little differs from the western culture. There are two opposing views on the position of women in Islam. First opinion: is that women are assured of their rights under the Islamic religion, their rights and obligations are written in the Koran. In the family she is treated with dignity and respect, and men relate to women with great honor. The attitude of men toward women is a part of culture and religion of Islamic countries, and has remained unchanged for centuries.
There is a second opinion that the rights of women are violated in the Islamic religion. Woman’s dignity is violated, she is completely subordinate to man and depends on him fully. It is often said about the poor and undignified treatment towards a woman. That is why a lot of women are engaged in struggle for their rights. Equal rights and dignity is a key demand of Muslim women.
The aim of this work is a true and fair view of the attitude toward Muslim women in Western countries. It is also important to say about the attitude of Western countries to Muslim women, to tell why women are fighting for their rights, and how are they humiliated.
Status and rights of women in Islam
According to the Koran, a man and woman are equal before Allah. Yes, a Muslim woman has no right to be president. But this limitation has nothing to do with the humiliation of her dignity, and is associated with the specifics of the Islamic state system. In Islam, the head of state – is not just a symbolic ruler like Queen. The Caliph is obliged to direct the collective prayers, led by the army, responsible for national security. At the same time, a Muslim woman, according to Shariah, has the full right to participate in politics, to hold important government posts and positions.
A Muslim woman not only has the right to study, she is obliged to receive education. “Search for knowledge – the duty of every Muslim and Muslim”, – emphasized the Prophet Muhammad. (Beyer 2003)
A Muslim woman according to Shariah has the right to have her own independent source of income and spend money at her discretion. If to compare with Western cultures, only after 13th century European woman was able to fully achieve for themselves a similar law! Until the end of 19th century in England, a man disposed of personal property and all types of income from her estate and property of his wife at their discretion. (Beyer 2003)
A Muslim woman has the right to vote in all social, political spheres and at all levels of public policy. Suffice it to recall that in the U.S., women got a right to vote only in 1920! They didn’t receive it, namely, but got through demonstrations, strikes.
A woman in Islam has the right to divorce and is not obligated to tolerate harassment of her husband. Any material and moral damage is considered sufficient grounds for divorce, which empowers women through the courts. Note that a divorce is fraught for the Muslim huge material costs. So husband is obliged to fully maintain their children, to pay his ex-wife for their education, feeding up to a certain age, to pay for fair housing. A man is materially and morally interested in preserving of the marriage. No wonder the Islamic world is famous for its strong family ties.
With regard to religious duties, such as daily prayers, fasting, helping the poor and the pilgrimage among men and women are equal. However, in some cases, a woman has certain advantages over men. For example, a woman is free from the daily prayers and fasting during menstruation and during forty days after giving birth. She is also exempted from fasting during pregnancy and breastfeeding of the baby, if it represents a threat to health or the health of her child. If the missed fasting is obligatory (during Ramadan), it can compensate for the missed days when he could.
