The main idea of chapter 8 in the book is that white people and males are not taught to acknowledge all the ways they are privileged in society. The privileged position of white and male was the historical tradition for ages. The reason of white privileges was the European colonialism, which secured the dominative position of white people all over the word. The privileges of makes are more ancient; they come back to early times and to the “sword law”.
Nowadays, when males and females in the developed society of industrialized countries juristically have the equal rights, these privileges still exist informally. The list of informal male privileges includes the primacy of men’s comfort, the right of not being judged, the ownership on female bodies and so on. The informal male privilege in the society leads to double attitude standard and gender discrimination. Even the negative consequences of male privilege are not nearly as horrible for men as they are for women.
Deborah Tannen in chapter 20 demonstrates the specific features of business communication and stresses that gender still plays he significant role in the negotiations. Gender bias makes women to behave as men, because a typical female style of communication can be considered as a lack of competency, self-confidence and self-assurance.
The diversity can’t be annihilated but it can be managed. The Case of Pitney Bowes, who got a lot of awards for the diversity affords, proves that nowadays the companies with high diversity level receive many business advantages. The modern and tolerant diversity policy helps company working with the international partners, but at the same time it increases the effectiveness of company’s work due to the lower gender discrimination.
