The very term “classical music” appeared only in 19th century – as the opposition to the popular music of that time. Classical music, according the definition on the Oxford dictionary of 1836, included European music of “golden age”, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven. The main characteristics of classical music are the following:
1) The instruments for classical music are invented before or in 19th century.
2) The classical music is the music of complex form. The main form of the popular music is a song, though the classical music tends to such forms as the symphony, opera, suite and so on.
3) The classical music demands great technical skills in music playing. Most of the famous musicians finished the conservatory, it is almost necessary to have the special education to play the classical music.
Due to its complexity, classical music traditionally was considered as the music of upper classes. Really, in the 19th and even 20th century people from working and middle class could hardly afford visiting the concert of symphonic orchestra or to buy tickets into the opera. However with the wide spread of music recording devices the classic music became more popular. Generally speaking, there wasn’t strict border between music of working classes and music of upper classes even in “golden age” of classical music, and nowadays this border became even more vogue. People of every class can buy music CD with classical music or listen it on TV. Many people often don’t know they are listening classic music, because many classic melodies were popularized. For example, in many cartoons of Walt Disney was used classical music. Thus, the cleavage became less our days.
