During the last century, the roles and responsibilities of men and women in the society have significantly changed. The aim of this essay is to trace this dynamics and to analyze the existing state of affairs as well as review well-known writers examining this issue.
In my opinion, one of the most significant turning points concerning women’s right and role in the society was in 1848, when Elisabeth Cady Stanton introduced a convention on women’s rights. She states that status of an individual should not depend on sex; she claimed that women should be given the right to rule their own lives, get education, ability to be accepted to the chosen job position, freedom etc. Her convention was a significant milestone, but the changes could be visible only a century later.
Today, women have the rights for education, for freedom, for taking part in political life, discrimination has decreased etc. and these rights are fixed by the laws. However, the stereotypes are less flexible than laws. In the 1970s, Judy Brady wrote the claim on gender inequality called “I Want a Wife”. She ironically described the expectations for women and the absurdity of situation when women are expected to take full care of children, of the house, solve everyday problems, and are also appreciated to work and support a family at the same time. At that time, the grants retaken by women in combination with outdated expectations have increased the pressure on women. The echo of this effect can be witnessed today as well. Moreover, though women have been granted rights to apply for any job or to take part in political life, they were (and are in many cases) negatively accepted when they do use these rights. For example, women dealing with IT jobs such as systems administrator or hardware engineer face many difficulties and have to prove for a long time that they are true professionals. Women engaged in politics are also treated with prejudice. In the course of time the situation is changing, but the pace of changes is quite slow.
The activists of feminist movement often talk about men as discriminators taking advantage of women. However, it is not so; Dave Barry in his works like “From Now On, Let Women Kill Their Own Spiders” and “Men and Women – Miscommunication” shows the difference between thinking and perception of men and women. Indeed, if two sexes are different by their very nature, it is not correct to require them to be equal in the society and have equal expectations. In my opinion, the misbalance concerning women’s social role is based on the fact that feminist movement did not take into account that providing absolutely equal rights and (therefore) expectations for both sexes can be uncomfortable and destructive for the system as a whole. Many women complain that men have become indifferent and weak; in my opinion, this is the consequence of the fact that women have actively taken their roles. On one hand, this is a natural process since currently physical strength and capabilities are not the limiting factor for social and economical position. On the other hand, getting rid of discrimination and replacing men with women are quite different things, and I believe modern women should realize this fact.
