I think that people have no reasons to be concerned by the increasing trend towards multinational media because I consider that freedom of press means freedom of people. Newsom asserts that censored media is an evidence of secrets within a country and non-censored media or “journalism without borders” is the first symbol of Democracy (Newsom 2007, pp.46-47). I agree with this statement as freedom of speech is one of the most essential features of modern democratic society.
“Journalism is that product of the media system that deals directly with political education. The media system must provide reliable information and a wide range of informed opinions on the important social and political issues of the day.” (McChesney 2002, p.47) I think that the main goal of any media – newspapers, television, radio broadcasting, magazines – is to provide people with information, provide people with reliable information. Since the world now more and more often referred to as “a global village” I suppose that the more information we have, the more correct conclusions we can make. According to McChesney , a great majority of events happening nowadays in any country are interrelated with many other things that take place in other countries, so to evaluate this or that event, to forecast its consequences people are to know all these “chain links” (McChesney 2005, pp.18-20). In such situation nothing can be more reliable than eyewitness evidence which can be transferred to other people only with the help of multinational media.
Unfortunately, some governments try to camouflage the truth about some events, especially in such spheres as national politics, military conflicts, economics, and try to censor information broadcasted or published in mass media. Maybe, on the one hand, it is justified as politicians try not to wash the dirty linen in public and solve problems before they would have become the common property. But on the other hand nobody can disclaim the positive influence of multinational media. For example, multinational media corporations help to collect funds for natural disaster victims or refugees, or funds to protect wild animals.
At the same time mass media is widely known as the fourth power and its influence can change common people opinion significantly. That is why journalist should be devoted to their job and follow three main principles, or “The Code”, adopted by the Society of Professional Journalists:
– Seek truth;
– Obey the law;
– Minimize harm;
– Act independently; and
– Be accountable (Society of Professional Journalists 2007, p.11).
Everybody on our planet has a right to have his or her personal opinion about any thing that happens around. It means that we have the right to be informed. Multinational media contributes a lot into the realization of the abovementioned right. So, we should be glad that there is a trend nowadays to increase its (multinational media) influence all over the world. But we, as news-readers, news-watchers and news-listeners should always remember that “the media likes to create” hype” so that we watch their programs” (McMillian 2007, 121). With the expansion of news media sources growing over the last 20 years from a choice of three news programs to watch and one or two newsprint choices, to a virtue of over 10 news stations, the internet and many radio programs journalists want to draw our attention to them. We can go back in time and look at many different media cases whereby the media hyped up the cases to make us watch them. The questions we must ask ourselves is do they report in a professional manner, are their facts correct, do they seek the truth, minimize the harm and act independently? If we can answer yes to these questions, then you can rely on the information provided by this multinational media and believe them.
