The United States of America is a country of freedom today. Many people from other countries dream to live in America and become American citizens, that can be explained by different level of life in America and not without reason so many people dream about this country and possibilities of self-realization, which they can achieve in it. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are not simple and empty sounds for real Americans; because they know how many years their ancestors fought for them and how many efforts were set on their achievement.
It is well-known fact that the Declaration of Independence is a copestone of American thought regarding freedom and happiness. This document has not only historical meaning, but also it allows people to feel themselves free and protected in their native country. Thomas Jefferson as a creator of the Declaration of Independence began new era in history of the USA, because this document became world popular document, and, moreover, many countries of those times were greatly influenced by its content, and we should mark that in influenced on people’s minds and way of life.
It is understandable that for the first time in the history of the state document proclaims the principle of popular sovereignty as the basis of government. The Declaration of Independence accused the English king and parliament in the tyranny, in the violation of basic human rights and declared that henceforth the colonies are considered “free and independent states”, which “get the full right to declare war, conclude peace, enter into alliances, trade, and perform any acts or actions – to make all actions that has the right to do any independent state.”
I would like to discuss one individual, who continued to fight for independence in XXth century. This personality will be Angela Davis, because I like her personality and she made many changes, in spite of fact that she was a black woman. According to White (2001) we see that “Angela Davis has been an activist and writer promoting women’s rights and racial justice while pursuing her career as a philosopher and teacher at the University of Santa Cruz and San Francisco University – she achieved tenure at the University of California at Santa Cruz though former governor Ronald Reagan swore she would never teach again in the University of California system. She studied with political philosopher Herbert Marcuse. She has published on race, class, and gender.” I think that Angela Davis greatly changed people’s attitude to race problems and prove that women should have similar rights with men. In 1970, she was a symbol of a movement for the rights of prisoners. Angela Davis was famous for her activity in public and political sphere and also exactly for it she was a prisoner.
Thus, taking into account all information that was discussed in this paper we should to say that America was always looking for liberty and happiness. This country was full of people, who changed its history in the better side and Angela Davis was also among them. We see that Angela Davis left her track in country’s history and due to her activity; she was famous all over the world. I strongly believe that exactly Angela Davis impact on people’s attitude to woman and from those times, many women begin to search for their rights and possibilities to be equal with men.
