JetBlue Airways is an American low cost airline company. It was founded in August 1998 by JetBlue Airways Corporation in Delaware and its main base is located in John F. Kennedy International Airport. “JetBlue Airways took to the skies in 2000 under a novel concept: bringing humanity back to air travel. Based at New York’s Kennedy International Airport, JetBlue, a non-union airline, distinguished itself from other low-fare carriers such as Southwest Airlines by offering seat-back entertainment systems with live television, comfortable seats and blue corn chips. The airline quickly became a darling of the industry, earning millions of dollars in profits while big airlines lost money, and JetBlue’s founder, David Neeleman, became a business celebrity” (The New York Times, 2008). The core idea of the company is to promote safe and comfortable air flights for their clients.
Corporate HR Policy of JetBlue Airways and Its Corresponding to the Civil Rights Act and Contemporary View on Hiring.
The corporate values of caring, fun, safety, integrity and passion are incorporated within JetBlue airways (Gittel & O’Reilly, 2001). It goes without saying that these corporate values provided a significant impact on the formation of the basic policies dealing with human resource and hiring. It is a well known fact that the company plays in the service oriented industry and the corporate values play quite a significant role in corresponding to the Equal Employment Opportunity policies provided within the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

Dealing with the protectionism the Equal Employment Opportunity: “prohibit the discriminatory practices in hiring, discharging, promotion, layoff, and pay of workers…these policies extend to the training, selection, or recruitment of workers” (United States Commission on Human Rights 1966”. It won’t be surprising that the company, operating on the high quality level and playing a noticeable role in service oriented airline industry, keeps to the equality policy in all the beginnings dealing with Human Resource management and hiring (especially the aspect of equal payment should be noted). As every operator that wishes to correspond to the contemporary development of HR policies JetBlue Airways supports medical insurance and benefits system for its workers, industry compensation and profit sharing benefits for those “most overlooked group in the industry – the customer service and ramp workers” (Gittel & O’Reilly 2001). Another significant law that regulates retirement programs and protects the employees is Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). It should be noted that the retirement programs is one of the most well developed in JetBlue.
Hence the employees have to pass so called probationary period in order to represent the quality of their work performance. JetBlue Airays is considered to be a company that employs a lot of people and it would be obvious to note that such service oriented company should correlate it recruitment policies with the Equal Pay Act, which provided a significant influence on the company’s HR and “protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination” (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2009).
