To start my speech I would like to say that the problem of hunger is very complex one. It is both natural and socio-economic, affects almost all aspects of society and is a very big threat to many dozens of countries. The world hunger problem is perhaps the oldest of all the global problems of mankind. Hunger is an extreme manifestation and great social distress – descended upon the masses of people in antiquity, and in the Middle Ages, and during periods of modern history. This is evidenced by the examples of ancient Rome, medieval Europe, Russia, India and China.
I would like to point out that hunger is not only a threat to human health and life, but also a serious problem of falling educational level, productivity, which leads to a decline in the whole economy.
The problem which in the past few decades referred to the poorest countries in Africa and Asia, is now becoming increasingly important for the entire world community. High food prices completely abolished in the past the trend towards so-called “Millennium Development Goals” set by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2000. Then, it was stated that the main purpose of mankind is to reduce the number of hungry people worldwide by half by the year 2015. According to the latest FAO data, over the past year rising prices dropped below the threshold of hunger even 75 million, thus, their number in the world has dropped to catastrophic figure – 923 million people.( Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development, World Food Program, 2002)
It is also should be mentioned that Chronic hunger leads to a slowdown in many countries of the world as they grow up unhealthy and usually ill-educated generation.
But hunger is not only a problem of the inhabitants of “poor” countries. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture, in the U.S. also increased the number of people forced to deny themselves and their loved ones in the diet. In 2000, on the brink of malnutrition were balancing approximately 10.5% of households (family or people living together and leading a joint household), the U.S., or 33.2 million Americans. In 2005 this figure rose to 10.7% (33.6 million) in 2008 – up 11.1% (34.9 million). In 2009 (latest available data) in the U.S., there were 36.3 million undernourished people (11.2% of households), of which about 13 million were children.( State of Food Insecurity in the World, 2008)
I’d like to point your attention to the fact that in the U.S. and Western European countries malnutrition leads to a single deaths. However, malnutrition is the cause of many deaths, since malnourished people do not get enough to eat, that does not allow their body to resist diseases.
In fact, the fight against hunger and creation of sustainable food security are the most important challenges of our generation. But the fight against hunger can be won. In fact, from 1969 to 2008 the number of hungry people in the world fell by half – from 36 percent to 17 percent of the population of our planet. (FAO, 2008)
But the three crises – food, energy and financial reversed the progress in the fight against hunger progress and today the hunger comes back.
