First of all it is necessary to mention that the book “Natives and Strangers: A Multicultural History of Americans” is a kind of well written overview of history of immigration, assimilation and other related to this topic issues. Reading of this book help people to look at the immigration from a new perspective and reconsider some historical moments connected with this topic. Discussing the problem of this paper from the multicultural perspective we really understand that America is not only white’s man nation and there are many confirmations to this fact. In the acknowledgement of my words it is necessary to quote one part from the book: “During the past fifty yearsboth the role and the status of American minorities have altered. People already here saw changes that they perhaps had never expected to witness. To the surprise of almost all Americans alive in 1940, the flow of people in and to this country not only accelerated over the paceof the 1930s but its nature and character differed as well. Moreover, the commitment made to civil rights and equality of opportunity for all groups and individuals has transformed the United States from an Anglo-WASP dominated society into one where merit, and previous discrimination and handicaps, are taken into consideration in helping those seeking to improve the quality of their lives. Added to this is an immigration influx since 1970 that exceeds the totals recorded at the beginning of the twentieth century.” (Dinnerstein, Nichol and Reimers, 2003)
It must be emphasized that the development of multiculturalism is one of the brightest and the fundamental phenomena of American reality. It has many manifestations and, in particular, that different racial and ethnic groups refuse to accept some common vision of American civilization. In writing of a multicultural history of American civilization, which proves that history of American blacks, Mexicans, Jews, Chinese, differs from the history of American Anglo-Saxons, and, above all, reflects the presence in the past and present American social injustice. In any case, there is no doubt that the ethnic-racial diversity of American society today with a very large stretch of the imagination be described as a kind of unified “common human state”.
Thinking about American nation, we should also discuss this question in global sense. A nation is a social education, which is based on national communications. The state is a political entity. States form the political map of the world. Still, why from century to century the map is changed? The reason is that the state as a political entity can correspond to public education or do not comply. If one nation state, it is there for a long time, and without change, and if as a result of colonization from the outside or decline it changes, then under the slogans of national struggle and national reconstruction and national unity arises again. If the state as a political entity united by more than one nation, its political structure as a result of the desire of every nation for national independence is falling apart. The conclusion from the foregoing suggests itself. Scientists formulated it in very clear way: “The nation state – is the only political form corresponding to the natural public education.”Book analysis
Thus, taking into account all above stated it is necessary to conclude that American continent and the United State of America is a multicultural nation. White people appeared on the continent in the result of immigration and it will be wrong to state that America is only white’s man nation. Yet in America tolerates racially ethnic relations: No matter how bleak is this picture, – underlines one American scientist – more international countries, than this is difficult to imagine. Ethnic tolerance and respect for each other is amazing. He mentioned that he had never in all that time observe any manifestation of hostility, even in such form, as a smile or a leer, as between black and white. It should be noted patriotic Americans, or nationalism in the modern scientific understanding of the word, widely used in America and Western Europe. Since then, in this respect, Americans have changed very little – they are treated with respect for its history, extol their national character, show allegiance to their nation state. In the process of political socialization of children and young people educated in a spirit of patriotism, they are studying national symbols, slogans and symbols – the oath of allegiance to the flag, national anthem, national heroes, national holidays, etc. As a result, most young people after graduating from elementary school have a sense of nationalism and the idealized image of their own country.
