East Meck High’s resource officer Timothy Gerard was accused of assaulting his wife. The woman complained that he threw her to the floor, was slapping her on the face and placed a knee on her chest. She had bruises on the face and chest, and also had problems breathing. The couple has already been divorced for a year, but Timothy has custody of the child. The officer received administrative leave and was placed under departmental review.

In this case, the officer manifested his power and control using coercion and threats. This kind of power includes threats of coercion or coercion itself, threats to hurt the woman, threats that make her do illegal things or other threats, or their realization. In the regarded case, throwing the woman on the floor, slapping and placing the knee on the woman’s chest was a direct coercion (not even the threat). I believe that there were threats as well (however, they are not mentioned in the article). Since the main point of contact for the former spouses is the child, I suggest that there could be some economic or child-related arguments between them.

This incident could have been solved politely and respectfully in case Timothy Gerard chose other strategy of behavior – the strategy of equality. In our case, he could use the non-threatening behavior so that the woman could think and act without fear, and could trust him. In this case, I believe, the appearing conflicts could be easily solved. Also, he could use honest and accountability (which relates to the discussed problem) – in case he took the responsibility for himself, his dignity and his actions, could communicate openly and sincerely and could admit that he was wrong – in this case, as it seems to me, all feelings and emotions, whether negative or positive – could find a way out and would not lead to such grievous consequences.
