The video “Creativity and play” is a presentation by Tim Brown about the process of playfulness and creative thinking.
Tim Brown speaks about the importance of playfulness in a working process, while he points out 3 main reasons: better creative solutions, better work performance, and better feeling while working. Playfulness is like a recipe for mental health, as well as a method of developing creativity.
Tim Brown tried 3 exercises with the audience: first exercise was drawing neighbor in the audience within 30 seconds. As the result most of people were laughing, and saying “sorry”. This is the result of our thinking, as all adults have conservative thinking, they have certain and expectations. All adults feel embarrassment about their results, it’s because they have lost their freedom of judgments, and are afraid to think “out of the box”.
Then Tim has the audience engage in the following next two exercises: with the finger blaster shooting toy and the task of filling in the circles with images. In that way he wanted to show that playfulness is the very source of creativity. We should just naturally find ourselves thinking “out of the box”.
Over 50 years of research on creativity has shown, that playfulness have a positive impact on the ideas and creative thinking in groups, that can be used in a working process.
As Tim Brown said: “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”
And speaking about working in groups, it is a good method of finding new ideas, new solutions and innovations. Groupthinking is easier when it is held in less stressful atmosphere, in playful and humorous way. In such cases members of the groups feel socially safe, people enjoy work, they are not afraid to express their points of view, to propose something new and unexpected.
