3. Analysis of the article
The first theory the assumptions of which are highly applicable to the regarded article is conflict theory. The accepted bill will in the first place require the citizens to pay more bills, at least those who do not experience significant health problems (and those who have no health insurance today). From the point of view of conflict theory, such decision is another manifestation of competition for scarce resources – money, and the result of inequality – when structures having power oblige other class, which is deprived of power, to do something . Also, a likely explanation may be constructed using rational choice theory on the macro level: the rational choice of the state and corresponding structures is to accept this bill which will increase overall revenue from medical system and will strictly regulate the participation of all citizens in the process. However, on micro level rational choice theory shows that for those who have problems with health (and for seniors) this bill is a rational choice and they will support it – since it will probably reduce their spending on drugs; and those who re young or do not have health problems (especially middle-age groups) will be dissatisfied because for the current period this bill is not the rational choice for them – they will have to increase spending without getting immediate (or quick) return. Therefore, from the position of rational choice theory, there will be division according to age and social position into those who support and those who dislike this decision of the government.
From the point of view of symbolic interaction, the society will accept the bill and legislation positively in case it will be proclaimed that this bill is aimed at improving the nation’s health and guaranteeing better stability; i.e. if all the decisions will be explained from the position of benefiting the citizens, the society will regard the changes as “symbolically” positive and thus the legislation will be supported.
Finally, using functionalist approach, one can state that the new legislation is the reflection of the process of the system’s tension for self-maintenance. Indeed, one of the assumptions of functionalism states that “systems tend toward self-maintenance involving control of boundaries and relationships of parts to the whole, control of the environment, and control of tendencies to change the system from within” (Turner, 2002, p.111 ). The result of the bill will be increased control and regulation of health care which involves increased regulation of live of every citizen. Moreover, using functionalist approach we can state that such legislations are likely to be introduced not only in the medical sphere but in the other areas of social life as well.
Conclusion
Sociological theory is a central element of the work of sociology as an academic discipline. Using classical sociological theories, we have analyzed a current event article and have witnessed how sociological theory emerges from a system of thinking that links concepts – often new concepts – with evidence or data to create a broader understanding and explanation of the social world.
