In what ways does the city figure in Sweeney Todd and The mystery of Edwin drood?
The Introduction
In the introduction of my project, I want to give some common information about “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. I want to throw light upon the main facts about the novel. Also, I want to give some historical facts about the style of the novel.
“The Mystery of Edwin Drood” is the last novel Of Charles Dickens. This novel was not finished because the author died. The novel was written as a detective story with elements of gothic style. What the “gothic” style is? Gothic is a “child” of the Middle Ages (12 – 16 centuries). It had an effect on architecture, arts and literature as well. The gothic literature is interesting especially for those people who like unconventional literature. The best classical works of gothic literature was reflected in modern fantasy and horror films.
“The Mystery of Edwin Drood” was named after the main character of the novel, Edwin Drood, but actually it was the story about his uncle, John Jasper. Dickens died at June 9, 1980. Some parts of his novel were published, but it was just three issues instead twelve. In accordance with certain facts James, a worker of a printing establishment finished the novel. It was Charles Dickens in person who dictated James “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. Dickens died when the novel was halfway. But the great author felt closeness of the death. It was the reason why he worried about the unfinished novel. So he decided to dictate the end of the story to a worker of a printing establishment. After publishing of the full version of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” all literary critics had to agree, that the style and vocabulary of the new parts corresponded to the style and vocabulary of Charles Dickens completely.
Thus, Charles Dickens left his novel completed. It was said that Dickens was not able to write an intricate storyline. So, the author decided to write a novel with a complicated plot and unexpected end. At his previous novels, Dickens never tried to keep a mystery; but after publishing of the novel’s parts people were not able to guess the end of the story.
Another “gothic” story is “Sweeney Todd – the Demon Barber of the Fleet Street”. This story is differ from the story about Edwin Drood. Sweeny Todd is said to be a real man. According to a legend, he is “one of the Londoners of all times”. The legend chilled and fascinated many people who like scary stories. “Sweeney Todd has become so ubiquitous that is had entered the English dictionary”.
What the legend said about the barber? He was a killer and cannibal. I want to cite the part of the legend (books.google.com ):
“A prosperous London barber in the days when the men were compelled regularly to bare their throats to be shaved by comparative strangers, Todd routinely murders the unsuspecting patrons of his Fleet Street “tonsorial parlous”.

Making use of an ingeniously constructed barber’s chair, he dramatically hurls his victims head over heels into the basement of his shop before robbing them. Occasionally, if the drop from the chair to the stone floor below has not already done the job for him, Todd is compelled to” polish them off” with his razor. He then drags their bodies to the convenient cellar of the nearby premises of MRS Margery Lovett who transforms the fresh corpses into succulent meats pies. The clothes and personal items belonging to Todd’s unlucky customers are hidden in the barber’s house”.
Also, the official cite knowledgeoflondon.com gives some information about Sweeney Todd. He was born on 16th October 1756, at number 85 Brick Lane in London’s East End.
His mother’s name was Elisabeth; she was a silk-winder. Samuel Todd – his father – was a silk weaver. At the age of 14, in February 1770 Sweeney Todd was put in Newgate Prison a 5-year term. He was wrongly accused of stealing a watch from a man’s pocket. In the prison Todd met Elmer Plummer, the barber. He was a fraudster. Plummers tout the teenager how to cut hair and shave. Also, he showed Todd how to stall things of the customers. Todd was a smart pupil. Soon he shaved some of the prisoners.
Todd released in 1775. He opened his Barber Shop at the 186 Fleet Street soon, “next door to St Dunstan’s Church, just a few blocks away from the Royal Courts of Justice. The shop stood at the side of the narrow alleyway named Hen and Chicken Court, at the corner of Fetter Lane” (according to the cite knowledgeoflondon.com).
London’s first newspaper “The Daily Courant” wrote about the murder that could be done by Todd. The murder was committed on 14 of April near to Fleet Street. A man from the country was killed there. People saw the killed man arguing with the barber “when the barber took from his white coat a razor and slit the throat of the man, the barber then ran towards White Friars Street, disappearing into the fog”.
