History was traditionally a subject to detailed researches, which though raised a number of debates between scientists and researchers of history. In such a situation, writing a history book is a challengeable task and many authors of history books are vulnerable to severe criticism from the part of historian, literary critics as well as the audience because history books can evoke quite controversial reactions and response from the part of readers. In this respect, the book “The Global Experience” by P.F. Riley, F. Gerome, H. Myers, and Chong-Kun Yoon is particularly noteworthy because the authors have attempted to narrate the global history through the collection of primary sources. In fact, such an approach to the creation of the history book has proved to be very effective because it helped the audience to learn about the basic facts and events in the world history from the primary sources used by the authors of the book, although, it is worth mentioning the fact that this approach has certain pitfalls because it leaves up to the audience to analyze the information they can read in the book and it is up to the audience to make conclusions and judgments and events that have occurred in the world history throughout different epochs.
On reading the book “The Global Experience”, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that the authors focus their attention on the narration of the world history from the beginning of human civilization and the earliest evidences and historical documents that were created by people to present era and the recent history of the world civilization. The book uses primary sources as the major source of information about the world history and the development of the world throughout different epochs. In this respect, it should be said the book is structured chronologically when each chapter of the book is dedicated to a specific period in the history of the world. Remarkably the authors use primary sources and they minimize the interference into the content of the book. In such a way, they apparently attempt to avoid the impact of the authors on the audience and let readers to learn the global history through documents which belong to different epochs and which were created in different countries and civilization. These documents were just collected by the authors, structured and systematized to convey the history of the world.
In this respect, it should be said that the early evidence and documents collected by the authors focus readers’ attention on the earliest civilizations of the world, such as the Sumerian civilization, the civilization created in ancient Egypt, Hellenistic and Roman civilizations as well as other civilizations that influenced the development of the world and which left primary sources as evidences of their existence. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that the authors focus on the rise of different civilizations. In such a way, they avoid a one-sided approach to the development of the world history. For instance, they have managed to surpass the pitfall many other research often fall in. To put it more precisely, some authors present a subjective view on the development of the world history presenting European civilization, especially that of Hellenistic world, as the cradle of the world civilization. In such a way, authors underestimate the significance of other civilizations existing in the world in the same time or other time as Hellenistic or Roman civilization. Instead, Riley and others avoid such a subjective approach to the interpretation of the world history. In fact, they attempt to avoid any interpretation of history at all. Instead, they present primary sources from different time and civilization, whereas the audience can evaluate and assess the significance of certain events and trends in the development of the world history independently of the authors of the book.
At the same time, in the course of the world history the evidence documents and primary sources evolve and vary consistently. Some of the sources used by the authors are well-known not only to specialists but also to average readers, whereas others are quite rare and the question concerning the reliability of these resources arises because it is unclear the extent to which these resources can mirror the actual development of history and whether these resources are trustworthy at all. On the other hand, the use of rare resources helps readers to take a deeper view inside the society and historical events that took place in the world in different times and places.
On the other hand, in spite of introductions to primary sources made by the authors of the book, it is still quite difficult for average readers to understand properly the historical context and the actual role of primary sources and historical events and facts described in the primary sources used in the book. In other words, the text of the book may be difficult to read and comprehend to average readers because primary sources are not adapted to them. However, the primary sources used in the book “The Global Experience” can be very helpful and useful to historians and researchers who want to have a deeper insight into the past and history of certain region of the world or certain historical epoch.
In addition, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that, in spite of seeming benefits of the primary sources used in the book, they impose significant limitations on the book and on the depiction of the world history by the authors. In fact, the primary sources need solid professional background knowledge from the part of readers to understand the message and the facts and events described in the primary source. Second, the use of primary sources may lead to erroneous conclusions or misinterpretations of historical facts and events being made by readers, especially if they are not experienced in work with primary sources. In addition, the selection of the primary sources for the book was up to the authors of the book that can make it quite subjective, even though the authors attempted to minimize their interference in the depiction of the world history and to prevent their book from being too opinionated. What is meant here is the fact that some important primary sources could have been omitted by the authors of the book, whereas others, less renowned and significant, may play unexpectedly, undeservedly important role in the perception of the world history by the audience in the course of reading the book.
Thus, in conclusion, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that “The Global Experience” conveys the world history through primary sources and helps readers to get insight into the life of people in the past but the book needs certain background knowledge from the part of readers to understand and interpret primary sources adequately.
