Tarasoff v. Regents of the University of California is a significant landmark case which deals with the decision of the Supreme Court of California concerning the duty of mental health professionals to protect people who are being menaced by patients.
Prosenjit Poddar born in Bengal, India, belonged to “untouchable” caste. Being a student of the University of California, Berkeley he dwelt in International House. In autumn 1968 each week during the folk dancing classes he met Tatiana Tarasoff. On New Year’s Eve she kissed Poddar. He misunderstood that incident. Tatiana on her part was uninterested in intimate relations with Poddar. That fact wounded Poddar’s feelings. He had an intense longing to take revenge. On account of it the fellow had emotional crisis. After Tatiana’s departure to South America Poddar’s condition had ameliorated. Poddar was Dr. Lawrence Moore’s patient. The moment the medical man had learned about Poddar’s intention to kill Tatiana he informed the police of it. After a short arrest Poddar was released. He stopped consulting his psychologist.

According to the California Supreme Court’s judgment mental health professionals are responsible both for their patients and for those who are at hazard. That decision was adopted by most states in the USA and even outside the country.
As far as I am concerned I see eye to eye with the court ruling. Actually I consider the decision to be wise and it is mental health professionals who are to bear responsibility for their patients’ actions.
