It is hardly possible to formulate this criterion more distinctly, than it is done in a parable of the Good Samaritan: “A Jewish man was travelling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Levite walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’ “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Analyzing this case we can say that it is a good example of pro-social behavior. Act of help of compassionate Samaritan that is why so notable, that was carried out in default of social pressure and even not on eyes at able to estimate him spectator, that is why also, that to the Samaritan so hard moral norms were not prescribed, as to the priest and to the Livites, and that is why yet, that Samaritan took the trouble, related to helping and expenses, having no thoughts on a reward.
Taking for example one more situation we will discuss pro-social behavior from its position. On the whole pro-social behavior characterizes acts, accomplished one man for other and for the sake of his benefit. This determination is faithful and in that case, when helping also turns to the account. So, if on the way in the cinema you lay 20 dollars in the mug of Salvation Army, to make impression on a friend, such act however will be pro-social. Into this wide category there is more restricted type of pro-social behavior. We will name it in this part of our paper the display of kindness. In this case an act is of the use other, but does not give an external reward or confession helping. We will suppose that you did not begin to put 20 dollars into the mug of Salvation Army, to make impression on a friend, and sent them anonymously, as you know that after it will feel generous. A fundamental difference between these two acts consists of that, what reward you want to get: internal or external.
Psychologists understood this distinction of sources of reward a long ago, so that the more moral are consider those pro-social acts which are explained exceptionally with internal rewards. Some theorists defined such internal motivation of help as altruistic and about altruistic motives it was mentioned in previous information. Other researchers and theorists under altruism imply yet more restricted type of pro-social conduct – that we can name pure altruism. Pure (or authentic) altruism is characterized by a behavior, directed on that, to bring a benefit other man, and such actions are accomplished exceptionally for the sake of welfare of other person. The acts of this category directed for help are accomplished regardless of external or internal rewards. A fee can be for a help, but an act remains pure altruistic, and rewards do not stipulate a help. So if you sent 20 dollars in Salvation Army and then felt kind, you accomplished the act of pure altruism however, subject to condition that did not do offering in an order to feel better or for the sake of itself. Presently the most difficult question which the researchers of help run into: whether there is pure altruistic act, deprived every egoistical interest.
Summarizing all information that were received during our research and was reflected in the paper it is necessary to say that persons are rendered by a help variously. All pro-social acts can be divided into three types, and they differentiate mainly by motivation of grant a help. It is reasonable to put question about that, why we must hope that someone will help us in a difficult situation. Eventually, a help, as a rule, implies, that persons are given by the time, energy, money and other sources to other man. However, regularly accomplished pro-social acts are in all human societies; aspiration to help is a line which is passed genetically. Therefore, probably, a help executes some important functions both for society and for an individual. Indeed, numerous researches show in social psychology, that pro-social acts serve to a few aims. We help, because we want:
1) to improve our own prosperity;
2) to promote social status and deserve approval other;
3) to support our “I-image”;
4) to manage with an own mood and emotions.
Thus, taking into account all above stated it is necessary to conclude that often a pro-social behavior compels a man by something to endow, supposes certain charges or even risk and can be a reaction on the positive motivational or emotional states, i.e. people behave themselves so, when they are satisfied, quiet and ready to show sympathy. Researches show that a pro-social behavior took began in preschool childhood and it can be discovered for children already in 2-years-old age. It is formed under influence of social environment and will mediate amities, anxiety, human warmth and social understanding. On development of pro-social behavior enormous influence is rendered by parents, and also by brothers and sisters. Making our research we can say that we learned main characteristics of pro-social behavior and illustrated it with concrete and understandable examples. And connecting pro-social behavior with altruistic motivation we should mention that, altruism as unselfish service to people, plugging in itself altruistic necessities, settings and motivation, as an index, determining an orientation personality on the whole, plays an important role in professional activity of people, busy in the field of “human-human”, we should also to add that forming and development of this quality is an important task for each person, preparing to devote own life to social work.
