Every person passes through various stages of development beginning from childhood and during the lifespan, depicted and graded clearly by such famous scientists as Sigmund Freud, Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson and others. According to them if a person passes all these stages successfully, he becomes a psychologically full-fledged person. Absence of some factors can change the development and affect the psychology of an adult. In order to examine the development of a person it is interesting to make the example. Let’s analyze Michael Jackson developmental biography in order to describe how the person can change under the influence of his psychological development in childhood.
Endless litigations, questionable reputation and regular in recent rumors about bankruptcy – this was the baggage with which Michael Jackson met his half-century anniversary. On the 29-th of August 2009 the King of Pop was 50 years old.
Today it is hard to find music videos, which has no Michael Jackson’s influence, whether it is a dance movement, musical passages or scenes. Jackson has made such a success thanks to (or despite) the hard nature of his father, without whom Michael’s career could never occur. He became an international star being 6 years of age. While other children watched cartoons, Michael set choreography for the family group Jackson 5. Michael grew up the seventh child in a family where there were nine children.
First, his father Joseph Jackson included Michael in the group, as a purely fake item, but it soon became clear that the kid had the outstanding musical talent. Young talent led the group to first major contract. Between 1969 and 1971 the band had released six singles that became hits, among them were “I Want You Back” and “ABC”. But this time was the most difficult for Michael. About his father, hard and oppressive man, Michael remembered with a shudder. He usually practiced with a belt in his hand, teaching his children how to act in a public. Despite this, Michael eventually was able to understand and forgive his father.
No wonder that beginning the adult life in such a young age, Michael had earned serious complexes, which subsequently led to his bizarre proclivities. In his own words, he was trying to relive those happy moments, which he did not have. He grew up on the stage, he grew up in nightclubs. He never had Christmas with his family, did not go to school having private teachers. It was too hard not to socialize with the peers, all in all to grow as a child star. And it was more difficult to grow up and become the adult star.
Nevertheless, Jackson was not satisfied with the popularity of the group, and soon using the studio Motown he made his first independent record. When in 1971 his first single track “I’ll Be There” reached the 4th place in the charts, it became clear that the new superstar appeared on musical horizon. Continuing to work with his brothers, Jackson made some more hit records, and released his first album. In 1976, he and “Jackson 5” sign a contract with the studio Epic.
So Michael got a new producer, Quincy Jones, a former jazz musician, a man with exceptional absolute pitch. In 1982, releasing a famous album “Thriller”, Michael became a real star. Mor than 40 million copies of this album were sold. Collaborating with Jones Michael obtained 8 Grammys and recognition of music critics.
Since 1983, Jackson can be called the king of pop music. He signed a contract with “Pepsi-Cola”. By the way, those who blame Jackson for excessive self-confidence, may be surprised to learn that the title “King of Pop” was first given by Elizabeth Taylor.
Throughout his life, Michael Jackson was surrounded by rumors and scandals. The singer always hated his nose, and characteristic African-American appearance, he was often teased by his own brothers and father addresses to him as “freak”. And with the first money he began to remake his appearance. Although there was another version: Michael had to consult a surgeon after severe burns of head, received during the filming of advertising “Pepsi” in 1984.
Plastic surgery, skin discoloration due to illness and other scandals fueled interest to his person, but the most terrible blow was in 1993 when a 13-year-old boy accused the singer of sexual harassment. This was not a PR dream, even in the most terrible nightmare. Once the press got the information that Michael had paid the boy’s parents, in order to hush up the trial, the audience had no doubt – guilty.
To public surprise the American press came down in favor of Jackson, and one of the western media even conducted their own investigation, which revealed that the singer was probably a victim of a well-thought-out plan, drawn up in order to squeeze money from him. Of course, if Jackson did not demonstrate so clearly his strange love for children, nothing would happen.
After this scandal, Michael acquired not only a dubious reputation, but overnight lost lucrative contract with Pepsi. The singer did not have new albums, positive reputation seemed to be lost forever, and fans’ love was inevitably dying down. In order to reject finally the gossip about his sexual orientation, in 1994 Michael married the daughter of another king, rock’n’roll – Lisa Marie Presley. It was said that this step was a well-planned PR campaign, especially as they since divorced exactly in a year and a half. With regard to their own children with Michael Jackson Lisa Marie was categorical. Michael insisted on having a baby, but Lisa Maria could not imagine his future, especially endless courts concerning guardianship.
After some time, Jackson married again. This marriage had two children, but rumors of their artificial conception, and doubts about Jackson’s paternity did not stop for a moment. It was not a secret that Debbie Rowe just acted as a surrogate mother, she knew perfectly, that Michael wants to have children, but with Lisa Marie it was impossible. Generally speaking, their family was not traditional. Jackson madly loved his children, they were everything for him. Therefore, he said he wanted a big family, eleven or even twelve children.
With the exception of that memorable event on the balcony of the hotel, when Jackson almost dropped his newborn child, demonstrating him to reporters, Michael was considered to be a good father. Many of his singularity can be explained by severity of his father. Michael was strict with his children, but the severity was more humane, than upbringing given by his own father.
But whatever the King of Pop did, his every move was viewed with outright prejudice. So with this baggage, he came up to these days, in order to make a final desperate attempt to regain, if not human tolerance, then at least some former glory, all in all to pure his soul of harmless and completely unprotected child.
For several years he generally refused to give interviews, even there were rumors that he had moved to live in Bahrain. But Michael could not live without a scene. Last year, the press leaked the information that he was going to come back with a new album. Then a strange video with the duo Michael and Akon “Hold my hand” appeared in internet, but it was deleted literally in a few hours by Akon’s record firm. Nevertheless, the rapper claimed that the new song would allow Michael to return to the stage with a worldwide hit. Moreover, like most of Michael’s songs it is also very informative and makes people unite around the world, fighting against conflicts and wars.
But a well-planned triumph did not happen. On the 25th of June 2009 Michael Jackson fell down unconsciously at home in Los Angeles. The ambulance doctors who arrived on call performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Jackson lapsed into a coma and died shortly after he was taken to the Medical Center, University of California. Supposedly, cardiac arrest was one of the probable causes of death.
During his career, King of Pop has sold 750 million copies of albums worldwide, won 13 awards “Grammy”, his singles reached the first lines of the U.S. charts 13 times. His name is listed twice in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist and member of “Jackson 5”.
Guinness Book of World Records recognized Jackson as the most successful artist, and album “Thriller” – the most selling album of all times. He was also awarded with the title of the Artist of the Century by “American Music Awards”.
It is said that Jackson’s early experiences have developed into one of developmental delays, and he was a child with a body of mature men. Jackson’s former representative said that Michael had no childhood, but he hopes that he has now.
According to Sigmund Freud’s and Jean Piaget’s theories, Michael Jackson was a balanced person as he passed the cognitive-developmental stages (sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational) and psychosexual (oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital) stages of development fully. While according to Erik Erikson’s theory it is obvious that the social experience had a great impact on Michael’s psychology and behavior.
