It is known that such events often have substantial political, social and economic implications for the society. The assassination of the head of a country or a significant political leader affects political stability, increases the level of political tension, and is the threat of civil war in the states. Washington riots of the 4th-8th of April 1968 were organized because of the murder of King. Civil commotions affected more than 110 cities of the country. Such cities as Washington, Chicago and Baltimore have also been affected.
As soon as news about King’s murder spread in black neighborhoods, people began to go out to streets and gather together. Quiet at first, the crowds later went out of control and began to crash shop windows and beat showcases. By 11 pm, a real looting have begun, which involved about 30 more cities.
The mayor of Washington ordered to remove the effects of unrest and clean streets before sunrise. But by Friday morning, the mood in the crowd was just as warlike. There have been several clashes between the rioters and the police. By noon, some buildings were set afire, and firefighters could not reach them because of the large-scale riots.
The crowd of 20,000 people shocked the police in amount of only 100 people. President Lyndon Johnson immediately sent 13,600 federal troops to help police. On the 5th of April, a raging crowd was just in two blocks from the White House, but later retreated. The occupation of Washington was the most extensive since the Civil War. The mayor imposed a curfew and a ban on the sale of alcohol and weapons on the territory of the city. During those unrests, 12 people were dies (mostly because of fires in houses), 1097 people were injured and more than 6000 were arrested. It was burned about 1200 buildings, about 900 of which were stores (Clayton.1996).
Unrests made serious damage to an economy of Washington. Because of many ruins, a lot of work places were destroyed, and prices for insurance have soared to unprecedented heights. Affected scale riot, the residents of the city moved to the suburbs of the city, increasing the prices for houses. The crime rate in the affected neighborhoods has grown rapidly. The same happened in Baltimore, Louisville and a lot of other cities (Jeffrey. p. 26).
The death of King confirmed the correctness of his chosen direction. It seemed that it had to put an end to hopes for the possibility of peaceful struggle. The assassination of such a significant leader as Martin Luther King Jr. influences the American society greatly. It brought to substantial political, social and economic implications for the society. The assassination affected the political stability, increased the level of political tension, led to interracial problems and to the unrest of the masses in society. The assassination of the leader always leads to psychological, cultural, political and sociological oppression of the country.
