The profession of a photographer implies the high degree of responsibility and professional conduct which meets high ethical standards. In actuality, photographers should be true professionals because they often confront situations, when numerous ethical and legal issues arise. In such a situation, they need to act responsibly respectively to their professional code of ethics and code of conduct (Hildebrand & Lawrence, 7). In this respect, it is important to lay emphasis on the fact that the ethics should be one of the primary concerns of any professional photographers because they work with clients and their work may affect not only feelings and emotions of their clients but also their social standing and their relationships with other people, including their family members, friends and others. In such a way, it is the responsibility of photographers to help people to avoid possible pitfalls they may encounter because of the photos they wish to make (Dubiner, 3). At this point, it should be said that many people underestimate the significance of photos and potential impact photos can have on their professional and personal life. Therefore, photographers should take the responsibility and prevent their clients from errors and actions that may have a negative impact on their life if the photos they take create a negative image of clients.
In addition, photographers should be aware of the cultural background of their clients to avoid taking photos which may be offensive for cultural norms and standards of their clients. In this respect, photographers should be good psychologists above all because each individual has his or her own set of values and norms and standards of behavior which cannot be violated. Otherwise, they would be offensive and photos that are offensive to clients or their social environment are absolutely unacceptable. In fact, professional photographers should avoid taking such photos by all means. If they fail to do it, they can hardly be considered as true professionals. Moreover, photographers learn to work and communicate with their clients because it is through communication it is possible to establish positive interpersonal relationships and reveal possible pitfalls, which professional photographers should avoid in their work. In such a way, photographers can identify ethical issues which may raise serious problems and affect their clients.
At the same time, professional photographers are not just photographers but they are artists who create their works for individual clients as well as for the mass audience. In this regard, professional photographers should be particularly responsible because, when they work for the mass audience, they should avoid offending social norms and standards and values of the audience (Long, 12). Naturally, if they create photos for the mass audience they cannot work for certain groups only but they should consider the fact that many people with different tastes and ethical values can view their photos. Obviously, photos may have a different impact on different people. Therefore, professional photographers should avoid taking photos which are offensive (Winslow, 6). To meet this goal, professional photographers should ground their work on the basis of universal humanistic principles, which share people representing different cultural and social groups and which make people truly united. Moreover, using humanistic and universal ethical norms, professional photographers can create photos which become objects of art, masterpieces which survive even after the death of the photographer because pieces of art are immortal.
