First of all, it is important to say about the origin of the film, about it’s topic and how it was made.
“The boy in the plastic bubble” film is drama, a family and romantic one. This story is very touching, pathetic, heartwarming and emotional, and it was necessary to express all the feeling of the heroes at screen. The main stress in that case should be done on actors’ playing, that was successfully done in this film.
So the film is based on a true story of a boy named Todd Lubitch (Travolta), who is suffering from a seriously compromised immune system. The problem with his health made the boy live in a “plastic bubble”, just to survive inside the controlled environment. His loving parents (O Connor & Reed) tried to help him to live normal life, but it was hard to achieve, and only a girl named Gina made Tod want to live outside, she was his sense of life.
In fact almost all the characters are nice: “None of them have all the answers and none of them act like they do as compensation, none of them seem at all that self-absorbed. Given the setting they appropriately wear ugly clothes and dance to perfectly awful music”. (Steve McVicker)
Acting
Casting in fact was the key issue in producing this film. Only good actors playing can show the real idea of the film, that is to show a touching and heartwarming story.
The main role was played by a young actor John Travolta. He was a cute guy and teenagers’ idol, that is why he was hired to play the title role to make audience love him. And it really became a great hit, and Travolta became a star, loved by many girls and women, that made this film more popular. His acting style in this film was rather realistic, expressive, touching and emotional. For example, in the scenes of sadness the actor used very sad and melancholy facial expression, sad and low voice, sad eyes that are full of tears. He could express his emotional feelings through his face and body movements, voice and intonations. This good actor playing is a good tribute to the whole impression about the film.
