The task is: “The article informs us of the different waves of Vietnamese refugees that came over during the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Briefly discuss the different waves she mentions and how they are different. Why is their difference important for us to understand?”
It needs to be said that the immigration to the US was very complicated process for all of the generations of Vietnamese refugees, no matter when exactly they have immigrated. Some refugees experienced fewer difficulties because they have left at the young age or when the restrictions were not very strict. Others have faced significant complications like family circumstances or imprisonment. But in any case the dangerous travel to the new country is a difficult time for anyone.
In general, there are two periods of Vietnamese emigration consequently consisting of following several waves.
The first period take place in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. The process of leaving have being happened from 1975 till 1977 and it consisted of three waves of Vietnamese immigration.
According to some sources, the first wave involved approximately fifteen thousand refugees. The second wave was even bigger. And the final wave that happened during the first half oа May 1975 involved approximately from forty to sixty thousand refugees. What was unusual is that refugees were so desperate to leave they used even small boats and later many of them were picked by the U.S. Navy.
It’s important to understand the differences between these waves of Vietnamese immigration, because the first two waves mostly consisted of educated people who lived in the cities. These people have connections with businesses and with the U.S or Vietnamese governments. It means that they were skilled and ready to adapt to their new life in American society.
And the massive final wave called “Vietnamese boat people” mostly included poor population; unfortunately many of them haven’t survived during the journey. It is known that approximate percentage of survivals is from 10 to 50 percent according to the different researchers.
