Introduction
Not only our life comfort of depends on the natural environment, on the climate and its changes, but the sustaining of life on our planet depends on it as well.
Unfortunately, instability and harm are often caused to the ecosystem nowadays. The problem of environmental pollution is growing constantly, day by day. It seems that people do not value enough their own land, their planet.
What is pollution? According to the most common definition, it is “undesirable change in physical, chemical and biological characteristics of air, land and water.” (Freedman & Jaggi 2)
Also, it needs to be mentioned that there are two kind of pollution: natural and man-made.
The most aggressive factors that cause pollution are: population enormous growth and urbanization, and technical progress. Due to these factors nature faces with dreadful results.
Various forms of pollution exist, for instance, “chemical substances or energy (noise, heat, or light). (Freedman & Jaggi 2)
Pollutants can be substances or energies. They may have a natural origin; in this case they are considered contaminants when they exceed natural levels. “Water Pollution Has No Politics” n.a.)
One of the major problems of our modern times and future generations is the pollution of natural environment with various contaminants. There are the few kinds of environmental pollution, such as: air pollution, water pollution and soil pollution. These kinds of environmental pollution will be reviewed further.
I. Air pollution
Among the vital resources that are vital for sustaining life on the Earth water and air should be named first of all.
What happens with air? Various pollutants from industry, agriculture, construction, and other harmful human activities fill atmosphere with more wastes it could cope with. This awful situation leads to significant increase of the air pollution.
These contaminants in atmosphere have a very damaging influence on human health and animals or plants as well. I need to draw your attention to the fact that the air pollution causes “thinning of the defensive ozone layer of the atmosphere” and accordingly, climate changes as the result of this process. (“Invisible Air Pollution”, 20)
II. Water pollution
Recently, the World Health Organization indicated that approximately “18 percent of the Earth population lacked access to safe drinking water”. (“Water Pollution” n.a.)
And the situation with safe water resources doesn’t get better; on the contrary, getting clean drinking water is a real problem for people because of the constantly increasing water pollution. It is known that the most common mean of water purification is chlorine that doesn’t contribute anything good to human health.
The most significant reason of the water pollution is the industrialization. Among the major water pollution contributors are:
“Mining pollutes water supply,
Industrial water pollution,
Pollution from oil wells,
Use of artificial fertilizers,
Unrestricted use of pesticides,
Concentration of animal wastes.” (“Water Pollution” n.a.)
The purification is quite expensive. Usually purification process means detoxification agents usage or treating the water before use.
Acid rain are important element of the water pollution problem, Unfortunately, sometimes rain, snow, and fog containing sulfuric acid or nitrogen oxides falls and damages every living thing on its way.
