Muir, C. (2002) Workplace Readiness for Communicating Diversity. The Journal of Business Communication. Vol.33, Issue:4.
This source of information helps me to explore interpersonal communication problems that take place in the health care organization. It also helps to understand the main causes of poor interpersonal communication in the workplace. As the American workplace “has become more multiculturally diverse”, and most companies are satisfied with multicultutal workforce, there are a great deal of benefits. However, there are some problems with minorities who feel discomfort and alienation in the workplace. Such poor interpersonal communication can lead to leaving. The author of the article argues that the major cause of this fact is “the lack of preparedness for various programs” which are specially designed by the specialists to promote diversity. This source of information is very important for me as it helps to analyze the problem of poor interpersonal communication in the organization. The author of the article represents the Organizational Readiness Model which was developed by Armenakis and Harris in 1993. It proves the fact that the use of appropriate strategies and the assessment of the organization’s current interpersonal and social dynamics helps “to achieve the desired acceptance of diversity” among all the employees in the organization. This source of information will help to support my analysis of the organizational behavior problem because it discusses the importance of organizational behavior in the workplace. The above mentioned literature review gives a lot of useful information concerning the research question of this paper: How can interpersonal communication problems in the workplace influence staff turnover?
ANALYSIS OF THE PROBLEM
In order to analyze the organizational behavior problem in the workplace which is closely connected with poor interpersonal communication in the group and can result in high turnover, it is necessary to start with description of the major causes of the problem.
The major causes of the problem
It is known that some difficulties with interpersonal communication can influence the low level of employees’ job satisfaction and morale. It is necessary to treat others as you would like to be treated. This old saying can be related to our problem. There are a great deal of different causes of poor interpersonal communication which cause job dissatisfaction and high rate of staff turnover. They include the following ones:
• low level of ethical and moral education;
• dishonesty of employees;
• misunderstanding and distrust;
• racial abuse;
• cultural diversity;
• different age groups;
• personal affairs such as revenge, jealousy, antipathy and so on;
• unequal gender relations;
• unequal level of wages.
The above mentioned causes of poor interpersonal communication in the workplace can lead to conflict situations or to employees dismissal what increases the rate of the staff turnover to a great extent.(Phillips & Connel, 2003, p.7)
In our case, the direct cause of poor interpersonal communication in the workplace is connected with different age groups. The ADVO Health Care is the oldest health care provider where there is a group of old specialists with thirty years’ work experience. Those young employees who start their labor activity in this organization are treated badly by the old specialists. They not only humiliate the young employees but also they do not allow them to perform their duties in a proper way. They constantly point at their mistakes. Moreover, they consider that their methods of treatment are the best. They do not give the opportunity to the young staff to exercise initiative. Moreover, the old specialists get higher wages. Of course, the young specialists are dissatisfied with their job and are not interested in promotion. Their poor interpersonal communication influences high staff turnover in the organization. It is known that rapid turnover in staff is a serious problem which requires certain solutions.
