Part 1 Supervision and Consultation
The task is: “Following your careful review of the Supervisee’s Bill of Rights as well as the Supervisor’s Responsibilities to Supervisees and their Clients, discuss how these two roles may be expected to create an interactive relationship that is mutually beneficial to both supervisor and supervisee while placing the needs of the client first.
What might you consider to be the ideal relationship for you during your personal supervisory experience? What type of supervisor would you prefer to work with? Why?”
In my opinion, supervisory relationships like any other professional relationships have to be based on the trust and the mutual respect. Taking into account, that supervising is a learning process, the supervisee has to be absolutely confident in the professional competence of the supervisor. Also I need to emphasize that the positive and trustful relationships between the supervisor and supervisee should become the major priority for both them.
Borders & Fong (1994) indicate that “assisting supervisors in their development requires a cognitive shift from thinking like a counselor (e.g., focusing on client dynamics) to thinking like a supervisor (e.g., focusing on the counselor’s educational needs), and this cognitive shift seems to be pivotal to supervisor development”.
Watkins (1995) claims that “self-criticality is important for supervisors becoming more effective over time. Self-critical supervisors search for continuing education in supervision and sometimes have their own supervision work supervised by another supervisor” (Watkins, 1995)
What does the supervising usually includes? It consists of: “teaching therapeutic skills, providing professional experiences and opportunities, providing regular feedback and evaluation, encouraging compliance with legal, ethical, and professional standards” and other. (Corey, Corey & Callanan, 2011). The general goal of the supervising is to improve supervisee’s professional development.
No doubt that the supervisor and his/her supervisee have to define and discuss their goals and expectations at the beginning of the supervising sessions in order these sessions to be satisfying for both parties.
I would wish my supervisor to become my mentor and my role model in the professional context.

Part 2 Serving as a Professional Consultant
The task is: “As you grow and develop in your personal and professional areas of expertise, you may be called upon to serve as a consultant to other professionals. What considerations might you make in determining your ability to competently serve in such a role? What disclosures might you consider to your potential consulting client? What steps might you take to ensure a mutually beneficial and satisfying relationship with a prospective consultation client?”
If the professional expertise and knowledge would allow me to become a consultant, of course, first of all I’ll concentrate on consultee’s work-related problem.
The consultee experiences some difficulties in performing job-related functions. Therefore I should be an expert in finding solutions to these problems.
So, first of all, I should be able to identify a problem of my consultee. Then, there should be the good analytical skills, I should be able to communicate with people without any problems, and be an attentive listener as well.
The solutions to consultee’s problems should be communicated in a coherent manner, they also should be clear and understandable.
The process of consultation usually includes counseling and psychotherapy. It means that, as the consultant, I should manage the communication with my consultee in accordance with the general guidelines of working with client. The interaction of the consultant and the consultee has to be efficient, so I need to build up the mutul trust and comfortable atmosphere in these relationships. I should be 100% prepare to deal with the problems that the consultees are faced with.
The behavior of the consultant shouldn’t be too authoritative, just competent enough to communicate as equal. It should be noted that the consultation is an absolutely voluntary session. The consultee may reject the results of the consultation any moment, so one of the most successful ways for the consultant would be to built the trustful, even the friendly relationship in order to help his consultee to solve the problem.
