The stories by Edgar Allan Poe could be characterized by the number of mystical allusions and the ones I am going analyze are not the exceptions. In both stories the buildings: the House of Usher in the former and Montresor’s manor, play very significant role. They are the typical examples of the gothic stories, symbolizing the decay of their owners. The detailed description of the buildings in both stories reflects the dreary atmosphere in them and is the heralds of upcoming misfortune. Edgar Alan Poe is considered to be the father of the gothic novel and it is actually not surprising that he devoted so much attention to the “castles” roles in his short stories. They both play the core significance in the stories being important part of the scenery, where the major events occur, keeping the darkest secrets inside the walls.
In the other two stories there are also specific methods in terms of the creation of anxiety in the reader. In Monkey’s Paw the storyteller keeps the reader in tension from the very beginning of the story the reader is expecting some kind of miracle but the result of 200 pounds wish a young man was killed. This moment struck me the most in this story and the feeling of shock did not left me until the end of the moment. The Dracula’s Guest is also very striking novel and actually there could hardly found a moment I was impressed the most, probably, when an Englishman found a woman in the tomb. The atmosphere in the story is thrilling from the very beginning and I was really shocked when it turned that “beautiful woman with rounded cheeks and red lips, seemingly sleeping on a bier” was found there
