… Mrs. Tilley was still waiting for Sylvia and the cow to return but it was already 7.30 p.m. but they had never returned yet. Mrs. Tilley grew anxious about Sylvia because the girl had never been so late so far and it was the first time that she did not come before 7.00 p.m. Mrs. Tilley knew that the girl enjoyed to spent her leisure time on her own. Sylvia did not like to with people. Mrs. Tilley though that Sylvia enjoyed spending her time with the cow more than with people. She often mocked of the girl because of her embarrassment, when she encountered strangers, but still she had never come back so late so far. At the same time, Mrs. Tilley thought that the girl is just afraid of other people because a couple of years ago the girl was frightened to death by a stranger, who walked down to their village and encountered Sylvia alone on the bank of a river. The stranger was heavily drunk and he was apparently upset by something and he was quite aggressive. He had a dog, whom he practically dragged on a rope. As he dragged the dog he cursed and attempted to hit the animal with his foot. Nevertheless, he never stopped and kept approaching the river, where Sylvia stood. The girl felt pity about the animal but she was too afraid to say a word to a stranger and she was too little to do anything but she stayed there and stared at the strange man with the dog. Her horror grew stronger, as the man took a large stick and raised his hand to hit the dog to the ground. The girl thought that the dog would never survive if the man hits her. Suddenly, the little girl rushed toward the man with the dog and pushed him with all her strength. The man merely shattered under the push of the child but the mutual efforts of the girl and the dog, which had started to feel something terrible to happen and started to rush away from her master. Anyway, somehow after the push the man ease his hold and the dog escaped from him with the rope around her neck.
At first, the man did not understand what actually happened and he was puzzled how his dog had just escaped. But as he understood what actually happened, he grew furious and he started to yell at the little girl, who was practically paralyzed with horror. He would probably hit the girl with the stick as he was going to hit the dog but, in this very moment, Mrs. Tilley had found them for she went to look for the girl she was waiting for down the river. Luckily, Mrs. Tilley arrived in the nick of time to save the horrified girl from the furious, savage, drunk man. After that day, Sylvia became extremely anxious and she was afraid of strangers as well as people, whom she knew. She preferred to spent her on her own than with her peers or adults. On recalling this case, Mrs. Tilley grew anxious even more.
The more time passed the more anxious grew Mrs. Tilley. Her anxiety increased as her neighbor told her that people saw a stranger in the woods, a young man who walked there with a rifle in his hand. After this news the panic has stricken Mrs. Tilley and she told her neighbor that Sylvia had vanished. After a minute consideration, they started to start seeking for Sylvia. They called other neighbors and they rushed into the wood, where Sylvia could probably be and where she normally was with the cow. On having searched for the girl for about an hour, the horrified villagers found the spot in the wood with the blood stains on the ground and a strip from the girl’s dress was next to this spot. Mrs. Tilley had almost passed out as she saw the blood and the strip from the girl’s dress.
Nevertheless, the villagers did not give up and rushed for the search of the girl full of fear and ready to save the girl even from the devil’s hands. However, within ten minutes they have found the girl with a young man sitting at the bonfire and chattering gaily. The young man grilled the wild boar on the bonfire, his clothes was in blood stains. When the amazed villagers wondering what had happened anyway, they found out that the young man was a friend of Sylvia’s father, whom he had not seen for years. When he came across the girl, he asked her the way to the village to find his friend, but as he learned that he was looking for Sylvia’s father he suggested to go together. As they walked back, they young man suddenly noticed a wild boar, whom he hit down dead with one shot and the blood stains people found in the wood was from the wild boar. However, was too heavy and the young man dragged it together with the girl to a clear spot. After that they found they started to look for a cow, which ran away after the shot. When they found the cow it was too late and they just decided to dine before coming back home.
