It should be mentioned that the author perfectly knows the subject, its origins and the means, which homosexual communities use to reach the equality and make the gay and lesbian marriages be recognized all over the world.
The author explains the reader why the problem is so important in the contemporary society and the reasons of the negative effects it has on the society. It should be noted that the author also expressed his personal position alongside with the scientifically based data. Dealing with his personal vision on the Problem Bennett provides a number of reasons, why Gay marriage is not a good idea. Among them we could mention that legalization of the same sex marriages would severely damage the values of the marriage institutions: “The function of marriage is not elastic; the institution is already fragile enough. Broadening its definition to include same-sex marriages would stretch it almost beyond recognition — and new attempts to broaden the definition still further would surely follow” (William J. Bennett, 1996). Such a hit on institution would let people who want marry 2 and more persons also claim for legalization of their ability to marry.
Fort the second reason the author provides that the same sex marriages could not be compared to heterosexual unions and the question of intolerance is not raised. The author speaks about different understanding of marriage institution and how it impacts the lives of the partners. Bennett considers that the relations between men and women could not be regarded to as an open contract, as it often regarded to among the gay couples: “The marriage commitment between a man and a woman does not — it cannot — countenance extramarital outlets. By definition it is not an open contract; its essential idea is fidelity. Obviously that is not always honored in practice. But it is normative, the ideal to which we aspire precisely because we believe some things are right (faithfulness in marriage) and others are wrong (adultery)” (William J. Bennett, 1996).
As the core reason for the heterosexual marriages only the author considers that the sexual revolution and public struggle for the rights of gays and lesbians negatively influenced the teenagers: “Fifty teenagers and dozens of school counselors and parents from the local area were interviewed. According to the article, teenagers said it has become “cool” for students to proclaim they are gay or bisexual — even for some who are not. Not surprisingly, the caseload of teenagers in ‘sexual identity crisis’ doubled in one year. ‘Everything is front page, gay and homosexual,’ according to one psychologist who works with the schools. ‘Kids are jumping on it… [counselors] are saying, ‘What are we going to do with all these kids proclaiming they are bisexual or homosexual when we know they are not?’” (William J. Bennett, 1996). It goes without saying that making of such a significant question just a “cute” thing is not actually normal. It should be noted that the author provides a number of reasons for not permitting gay marriages, but the unhealthy behavior of the youth is probably the most important, as it would be almost impossible to grow up the healthy future generation. The author makes a stress on the fact that healthy sexual behavior suppose unchanged norms of the morality within the marriage institution and without this the upbringing of the healthy new generation would be impossible. It should be noted that the appropriate sexual behavior of the youth significantly impacts the psychic statement and psychological development of the individual. William Bennett carefully explains that the whole aspect of sexual behavior ought to be changed and the effects of these changes are really unpredictable as the contemporary norms were developed during the decades.
It goes without saying that legalization of the same sex marriages is one of the most acute questions in the present day world. And expressing personal position (like the author does himself) means staying indifferent. This would help to develop the appropriate solution of the question. Personally I consider that the author provided reasonable data for being against the same sex marriages as from the ancient times the core idea of the marriage institution was to give birth to the future generation and bring up healthy nation.
