Hofstede
I like the concept that the culture really matters in the modern globalized society. There are many challenges that international business faces with. Sometimes the cultural differences between neighboring countries may be bigger than between more distant countries.
Geert Hofstede has provided us with the largest scale cultural studies that included 117 thousand respondents from 66 countries. Although it was conducted between 1968 and 1970, the results of this research are still valuable.
Hofstede has developed a really useful approach of managing the international business. This method also helps to understand the cultural differences and specific features of interacting with people from the various countries, it helps leaders of organizations, and managers to make the right decisions taking into account the local peculiarities. Author claims this approach is able to reduce the level of manager’s frustration, anxiety, and concern regarding the international business management.
Every country has certain behavioral characteristics and cultural attributes. Organizational behavior can be defined as how enterprises work and how the people associated with them act.
A purpose of this paper is to provide a reliable argumentation of the following characteristics: Low Power Distance, Low Uncertainty Avoidance, High Individualistic and High Feminine.
According to my research the most appropriate region for these characteristics is Europe, and specifically Scandinavian countries, for instance I would suggest Norway or Denmark. These countries totally correspond to the indicated characteristics. Therefore, if the corporation is characterized by these attributes, it should be placed somewhere in Norway or Denmark, where corporation’s organizational culture will suit the local cultural values.
In my opinion, a company that values the four characteristics of low power distance, low uncertainty avoidance, high individualistic and high feminine definitely has some chances for success. It may be proved by results of successful work of some Scandinavian companies that have these organizational characteristics.
Low Power Distance
Many western countries have relatively low power distance, for instance in the UK or in Scandinavian countries.
Low Power Distance means decentralized hierarchies and more comfortable and friendly work environment for the employees. Head managers treat their subordinates with proper respect. Good work conditions and pleasant work atmosphere usually result in higher level of motivation. People become friends with their colleagues and sometimes they even socialize with their bosses.
This kind of company with relatively low power distance often has high level on imitativeness in this kind of company, and workers are usually entrusted with important tasks.
It needs to be said that there is no fear of the head managers in this kind of organization and it means that employees are able to express their ideas easily and share their thoughts with the top management. Management can gather excellent input from all of the workers. It may influence the business in a positive way, for example, if some of these innovative ideas are accepted, organization may become a market leader or a trendsetter.
Every employee perceives others as equals which gives a nice touch of democracy to the organization. This kind of organizational power distribution is also known as “the Dutch consensus-driven culture”.
