Jean Piaget. Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, presented the influential theory of cognitive development. He supposed that a child goes through four universal stages of development: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational. The first stage is sensory motor period.
Playing with a toddler
The first year of living is very important for baby. The infant learns to interact with the surrounding world, to coordinate the tactile and visual information and to response to it. During the first year child goes through four periods of development. Reflective sub-stage is the initial stage of development, on this stage a child can only follow the reflexes. The primary and secondary circular reactions sub-stages last to 8 months. To this age physical and cognitive development of child allows some repetitive consequences of actions, for example, the child can play the rattle or kick the mobile.
The forth sub-stage is the period from 8 to approximately 12 moths. This is the coordination of secondary reactions stage. Piaget called this phase “the first proper intelligence”. The infant understands the connection between the action and its consequences. For example, children of this age like to throw everything down and look to the fall. IN the age of one year
“Infants become intrigued by the many properties of objects and by the many things they can make happen to objects; they experiment with new behavior.” Thus, if somebody proposes the plush toy for the infant, the baby will try to reach it (stretching the hands or creep on all fours to it, than the baby will take it with the hand and likely will try to taste it, and then will throw it out. Thus, the infant sees the goal, reaches it, tries the known model of behavior (eats it) and the new model of behavior (throw it). In this way the тафте explores the properties of the toy.
