Levitation is the illusion of a flight. This trick is rather hard and that’s why it is very popular among the illusionists. The illusionist can levitate inanimate objects as well as animated, for example, their assistants. The most prominent illusionists can create the illusion of the flight. The objective of this research is to explain the illusion of levitation.
Levitation
There are many strange and inexplicable things in this world and nobody knows the borders of incredibility. However, the levitation is considered as one of the most incredible things in the world. The reason is simple: the levitation violates one of the main physical laws on the Earth – the law of gravity. From the early childhood, from the very first steps people feel the effect of gravity. The levitation is so attractive illusion because it makes people to believe that the violation of gravity law is possible. The audience can even believe that the magic exists.
Nevertheless there are only two explanations that can explain the levitation: the illusionist really has extraordinary power to violate the laws of universe, or he creates the convincing illusion of high quality. Sure, illusionists prefer keeping in secret their methods and assuring the audience in the reality of illusion. The intellectual rights on magic methods are the subject of contradiction, so nobody knows the magic methods in details except the illusionists. Despite this fact, there are some well-known ways to create this illusion.
Small objects levitation
From the ancient times the magician tried to make small objects flying. However, every time it is just a trick, the twist if the wrist. Usually performers use clear wires to handle up the objects. Nowadays popular illusionists like David Blain or Criss Angel supplement the old methods with the power of new technologies like digital video. Nevertheless some traditional methods don’t require the modern equipment. For example, the trick with levitating card (the spectator chooses the card from the desk, the performer hides the card into the desk and shuffle it, and after that the selected card levitates from the desk) needs a lot of training and probably the entertaining speech, and nothing more.
Human levitation
Fans of popular illusionist Criss Angel divide his levitation tricks into five different categories by the height and the presence of different objects near the performer.
“1) levitating a few feet in front of stairs or chairs, while turning his back to the audience.
2) levitating leaning backwards with one foot on the ground
3) levitating a bystander in midair
4) levitating 5 feet in the air with nothing around him.
5) levitating 5 feet in the air with an object behind him (From the Internet-forum of Unexplained misteries.com)”
Herein the description of some popular methods of human levitation is provided. Some this description were shown in documentary TV-show “Breaking the magician’s code”.
Balducci method
This method was described by Ed Balducci and popularized be many illusionists including David Blain, though the inventor of this method is unknown. This method doesn’t require the preliminary stage preparation, and the secret is only in the power of conviction. The illusionist should rise his hands up, move his body little forward and put one of his feet on the toe standing on the other foot. It is necessary to keep the audience small to reach the effect of levitation. Besides, the illusionist is recommended to practice with the friend or with the mirror to find the most effective angle. The angle is the most important secret for all the levitation tricks.
Looy’s Sooperman
It is the more complex type of Balducci levitation popularized by Looy Simonoff. The illusionist has to move his body forward like flying superman. Then he simulates his feet are in the air. The secret is the legs of illusionist are covered with jacket or other clothes and the audience doesn’t see he is standing on the ground.
King levitation
This is one more kind of Balducci levitation invented by Corey King. The previous type often seems unnatural because of the covering on the legs. This levitation tricks starts with the cover on the feet, too. The first task of the illusionist is to attract the attention to his feet. The illusionist removes the cover and announces that he is doing a real magic, without any cover, or something like that. After that he simulates the levitation in a few inches over the floor. The secret is that the illusionist takes the shoe away under the cover and hides his foot behind the shoes. The audience is sure that both shoes are on, and when people see the shoe in the air they think the illusionist is levitating. Actually only one foot is in the air, the second foot is standing on the ground.
As well as the Balducci levitation and Looy’s Sooperman levitation, this method doesn’t require the equipment and assistance, but as all the previous methods it requires some training.
Andruzzi Ascending Levitation
This trick is looks like the previous with one difference: the shoes stay on the feet. The secret is a hole in the shoe. The performer rises on toe for some seconds creating the effect of levitation. The audience sees the shoe in the air but doesn’t notice the bearing foot. It is recommended to wear black socks.
Asrah levitation
This method is more professional, it requires the help of the assistance and the special equipment. The illusionist hypnotizes his assistant and makes the assistant sleeping on the table (or other flat surface). Then the illusionist covers the sleeping body with cloth and orders it to fly. The body rises up the surface and soars in the air, and then it goes down. During the time of this trick the body is covered with cloth. One of the magic methods for this type of levitation is wire carcass, which imitates the shape of the body. There is no body under the cloth, the assistant hides or leaves the scene. With the sophisticated system of wires the carcass covered with the cloth is moving over the surface.
Conclusion
The illusion of levitation attracts people because of seeming possibility to violate the law of gravity. There are many popular tricks allowing creation the levitation illusion. Some of them are possible without the assistance and special equipment, and some aren’t. The performers can levitate different objects, small and large, animated and non-animated, up to their own bodies. However the common feature of all this tricks is that every of them is the illusion and no performer has the extraordinary power to break the law of gravity.
