Nowadays we consider different works of literature masterpieces of different times. I would like to pay attention on these aspects with more details and it is necessary to think about three works that considered masterpieces for a long time. The three works are: Oedipus the King by Sophocles, The Iliad by Homer, and The Divine Comedy by Dante. Three of them were written in different times and epochs and each of them is a bright masterpiece of its era if to think about them from the general definition of the term masterpiece.
We should emphasize that the main definition for the term masterpiece is “a work of outstanding artistry or skill; a consummate example of some skill or other kind of excellence”. That is mean that many masterpieces in their area of art are considered archetypes or model for all other works of its type. For example, analyzing Oedipus the King by Sophocles we see that his tragedy is full of interesting images and the value of Sophocles to the world of literature is above all in his images. Already the ancient critics noted as one of the main advantages of Sophocles’ his art of performance. It has a place, because describing human greatness, the wealth of human intellectual and moral forces, Sophocles, however, draws human impotence and lack of human capacity. I want to say that Sophocles completed Aeschylus transformation of the tragedy from the lyrical cantata into the drama. The center of gravity of the tragedy finally moved to the image of people, their decisions, actions and fight.
The Iliad by Homer is considered masterpiece of the world literature because it is a variation of legendary poem in the treasury of world literature: a source of ideas, plots, and characters in the art. The name of its creator – the blind singer Homer – is hiding in the fog of myth. Neither the time nor the place of his birth and death has not been established definitively. There is no certainty, and the blindness of the poet, who spoke to us in details about the history of the Trojan War and the return home of the king of Ithaca. I think that it is not only the first poem, but it is also the first novel in its genre.

The author chose only one episode of a long war and spread it so that it affected the whole heroic age. It is a good demonstration that history of people, usually starts with a fantastic retellings of myths and beautiful legends. These creations are always hidden in the grain of history, framed and coloured the truth with imagination.
The last work is The Divine Comedy by Dante that was written in the early years of disturbing XIV century from the bubbling tense political struggle depths of the national life of Italy. For the future – near and far – generations it remains the greatest monument of poetic culture of the Italian people, built at the turn of two eras. We see that Dante stands at the threshold of the Renaissance, on the threshold of the era, which needed giants and that gave birth to the Titans on the power of thought, passion and character, versatility and erudition. The Creator of The Divine Comedy was one of those titans, the poetic heritage of whom remained for centuries the magnificent contribution of the Italian people to the world’s culture.
Thus, based on all above stated information we could say for the conclusion that each of three works is deserved to be masterpiece as something new and unique. In my opinion, masterpieces are works that survive their generation and stay actual and necessary for people who are interested in them. In such a way all three works are unique and necessary for future literature development in their times.
