The history of mankind shows us that from times immemorial every epoch gave its people spiritual leaders and teachers (Jesus, Moses, Buddha, Gandhi). Those people set out for wilderness, searching for such things as inspiration, enlightenment and meaning. Times have changed drastically from those far-off days. But still many people of today’s contemporary society seek solace in nature, and take wilderness as an irreplaceable source of spiritual renewal. Unfortunately many people forget that wilderness is a dangerous stuff and plunge into it with no precautions. What is worse, there are a lot of youngsters, who do not comprehend these ideas completely and prefer to believe only in positive and attractive surface appearance. A young person who decides to let wilderness enter his life will hardly comprehend the profound ideas of the teachers of mankind (Vivo, 2009). Therewith he will hardly experience all those emotions and revelations that were experienced by those great men of the past. Unfortunately young people are most likely to give way to their wilderness through alcohol and drug abuse.
Alcohol and drug abuse among youngsters have become a real problem of the nowadays society. The problem is that young people do not comprehend the terrible consequences that enter their life after the long-term abuse. Thus the long-term effects of drinking alcohol beverages and smoking can be divided into physical and emotional ones. Thus, smoking marijuana, for instance, is linked to such physical problems as cough, wheeze and phlegm.

Marijuana smokers usually “inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which further increases the lungs’ exposure to carcinogenic smoke” (Ask the doc). Besides the most wide-spread problems caused by smoking are pneumonia and bronchitis. Emotional consequences are far more serious and dangerous. The most dangerous one is probably the risk of depression or anxiety alongside with other psychotic symptoms. What is extremely bad about it is that these things will not pass by themselves so the qualified assistance will be definitely required. The problem of drug abuse is very serious. The new study conducted by the Michigan University showed that “nearly one out of five delinquent youths suffer from traumatic brain injury, which can contribute to wide ranging mental illnesses” (Arbor, 2008). The examined teens showed an onset that is considerably earlier than that inherent in youths without TBI (traumatic brain injury). These teens also demonstrated the substance-using behavior, suicidal tendencies and more prolonged abused problems. TBI is a very serious disease. It is a head injury that can cause unconsciousness for the period of twenty minutes or even more. It is possible that fights and various assaults may happen during this unconscious period. The results of the conducted research appeared to be striking, as among more than 720 examined teens, more than a hundred reported having TBI. And most of them were likely to have used heroin for a long period of time.
