In my opinion learning a foreign language is a very interesting and exciting occupation. Knowing a foreign language provides you with multiple life perspectives: getting a proper job, easy traveling, reading books in their native language and meeting people from different countries with different cultural backgrounds. The semester of my English classes in Frontrange community college let me improve my English and discover many new traits of my personality and here my experience of learning there is.
During the semester of English classes I practiced in many kinds of activities connected with English learning, and naturally I improved my language skills greatly. I had an opportunity to try myself in supporting communication in English and inventing various life situation dedicated to the topics we were learning in class. It was really fascinating practice for me. When I came home after such classes it seemed to me that I kept thinking in English! It is necessary to point out that I learned how to express my thoughts and feeling in English not only orally, but also in a written form though it wasn’t easy for me. Although my grammar and orthography have been quite good I couldn’t manage to set the right structure for my essays, so they had a common tendency of looking underdone. I had much information to write, but had no idea of how to do that. Now I know what to start from thanks to my teacher who advised me to write an outline first, where it is necessary to point out the main steps of what I am going to write about, and then get to work. Moreover, I progressed in reading greatly; now the speed of my reading is rather good. The pieces of literature I had possibility to read in class and at home were really wonderful!
I suppose that the process of education is a very complicated thing and much depends on the atmosphere in class and teacher’s attitude to students. The atmosphere in my classes of English during this semester I may characterize as friendly and very supporting and understanding. It is easy to be interested in the process of learning when you feel that there is somebody to help you and give a piece of advise if you are wrong in anything. The teacher was always very attentive and tolerant to the students. I may maintain that after this semester primarily thanks to my teacher I realized that one should learn not for good grades, but for a proper level of knowledge.
It is very important for me that the course of English during this semester gave me not only a great deal of necessary skills in reading, writing, understanding and speaking English, but much useful information about who I actually am as a student and what my strong and weak points are. I discovered that I could be lazy enough to start some kind of activity, but at the same time I was surprised to get to know how persistent I could be in achieving my goals. For example, writing was always my weak point, but putting a lot of efforts, taking various challenges in this field I managed to cope with written kinds of assignments. Nevertheless there are still many other points I am going to work at during the next semester: vocabulary, new grammatical structures and phrasal words. Generally speaking, this semester revealed a purposeful, responsible person striving for knowledge and self-improvement in me.
