Nowadays we often hear different news which describe awful cases of Chlorine gas use. I want to concentrate our attention on Chlorine specific characteristics and its effect, but in my opinion it is also necessary to discuss its implementation by different modern terrorist groups.
In this paragraph I will give a brief synopsis of the agent’s properties and effect of its implementation in harmful aims. Let’s define the main meaning of Chlorine gas for the best understanding of our paper main subject. According to www.thefreedictionary.com “Chlorine is a toxic pungent greenish-yellow gas of the halogen group; the 15th most abundant element in the earth’s crust, occurring only in the combined state, mainly in common salt: used in the manufacture of many organic chemicals, in water purification, and as a disinfectant and bleaching agent.” Describing Chlorine gas we should also say that it is highly corrosive when it destroy such tissues such skin, eyes, upper repertory tract. It has toxic influence on humans’ organism and even can destroy cell structure.
Chemical terrorism is a new threat to the safety of humanity, considerably excelling the results of application of the most modern firearms. In the whole world the cases of threats of application of radio-active materials by the radically adjusted elements became more frequent lately, poisonous drastic matters and pathogenic microorganisms in terrorist aims. That’s why I want to look deeply back into the history of chlorine gas use and the next source will help me in my research. Moghadam (2007) emphasized that “Chlorine gas was among the first chemical weapons to be used as a weapon in modern warfare. In World War I, both the German and the British army employed chlorine, releasing the gas from large cylinders in a favorable wind. The use of chlorine in terrorist attacks, however, is relatively rare. In 1997, a serial bomber detonated several chemical bombs containing chlorine across Sidney’s eastern suburbs that injured some three dozen people. In Japan, on the third anniversary of the Sarin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway system, a chlorine-like gas was found in three beer cans in the Kasumigaseki subway stations. Other than that, reports of the use of chlorine in terrorist attack are sparse.”
Many terrorist organizations try to use Chlorine gas in their aims. We heard a lot of cases when Chlorine gas was used in terrorist aims in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to www.msnbc.msn.com we see that “Bafhdad, Iraq – Insurgents exploded a truck carrying chlorine gas canisters Wednesday — the second such “dirty” chemical attack in two days — while a U.S. official said ground fire apparently forced the downing of a Black Hawk helicopter.”
Thus, taking into account all above stated we can say that Chlorine gas can greatly affect people and nowadays it considers powerful chemical weapon, because it has a high level of toxicity and can destroy health in very quick way. The threat of application of chemical weapon by terrorist groups was lately increased. In my opinion a chemical weapon is frightful not only due to its destructive power, but also due to its psychological consequences; I mean psychological consequences of its application by terrorists will be in truth destructive.
