The lyrics of Devin the Dude “Lacville’79” reflect the way of mind and lifestyle of some part of modern American youth.
One has old “Lacville” and likes it very much, and all his everyday life rolls on with this car. He feels very proud while describing this car (even though it’s very old and has a plenty of defects) and satisfied while describing his life. We see him repairing his car, see him driving his car and hearing people talk about him, then he has a conflict with the police; then we hear something about his girl-friend, but in a minute he appears together with a fancy girl smoking seeds and so on.
And all this time we don’t see any deep emotions except the hedonic joy; no sincere feelings, no aspirations, no dreams of happiness. Even no love – his attitude to the car seems more respectful than to the women. Yes, he says “he loves his baby hell”, but for him her needs consist only of shoes and dresses. We can’t see them giving the hearts and souls to each other.
So the only his need is to live his own way like this; he seems not seeking more (just better car may be). The only trouble he knows is how to avoid the contact with the police and how to make his car better.
The number of dirty words point to rough manners of this man; his way of life, attitude to the police (laws, state, society the same) shows that he’s not the better member of the society.
It’s not a problem that some show-makers sing the songs like this. The problem is that we have really a number of young people living their lives like this and thinking this is good. And it seems their number grows…
