The article tells about the story of a couple, who faced an unexpected problem with reproductive medicine. Carolyn Savage is a patient of fertility clinic, and has made in vitro fertilization. But the problem is that after some time she was told to have the wrong embryos by mistake, so her future baby is genetically unfamiliar. Cases like this are, of course, very rare, like once in hundreds thousand embryo transfers, but the problem is evident.
So the article deals with the problem of Reproductive rights, that are based on the recognition of the basic right of all couples and individuals to decide freely and responsibly about their children. It deals with reproductive health policy issue, that is so important today. Fertility clinics are to be responsible for all the procedure of vitro fertilization, pregnancy and birth process. Such clinics have a series of strong protocol recommendations for such procedures, and mistakes can occur only if these instructions are not followed. Of course, it is evident, that accidents of mistakes in embryo transfers lie under the responsibility of clinic and doctors. So it may be said, that they have broken couple’s human rights?
There is a question of whether infertility is a medical problem or as a social problem. And vitro fertilization is also deals with ethical questions. What if Carolyn didn’t want to carry another person’s baby and decided? Does she have right to stop pregnancy? Legally, the biological parents should decide, but the question is how tragic the decision can be for all involved.
Speaking about the reproductive medicine, it is evident about fertility advancements. Are they necessary, or should people just adopt or be content with the number of children they have? This question should be considered in medical and social terms, for which the society, not only individual women should take responsibility.
There are numerous problems concerning the implementation of IVF, including whether there is a right to this technology, whether such access should be funded by health insurance. However, these problems take on meaning and importance only if IVF is perceived to be ethically right done.
This article shows that the use of vitro fertilization should be well organized, controlled by the health policy issue and the ethical issue, and do no wrong to parents, embryos, future children and society as well. Only in that case the use of IVF is justifiable.
