Buy essay on Good Design and Good Taste

The design theory is a comparatively new discipline in the scientific filed and its subject and object are still under consideration. The practice shows that design theory is an integrative and interdisciplinary discipline and due to this fact it is based on the theoretical basis of other sciences and disciplines, such as Humanities, Sciences, Psychology, Commerce and others. This theory provides facts about design development, its transformation and development. Design theory differs from other similar theories and presents an absolutely new tendency in the scientific field. It gives a clear understanding of what good design and good taste are and their interpretation in the historical context.
Design Theory is closely connected with Veblen’s theory of social change. Thorestein Bunde Veblen insisted that new technology always results in changes of institutions and spheres of implementation. New technology provokes appropriate social adaptation. Implementation of a new technology is a comparatively long process, because at first it gives a challenge to the old institution, forces it to resist and only when the resistance is weak, it becomes adopted. “Institutions are products of the past process, are adapted to past circumstances, and are therefore never in full accord with the requirements of the present” (Veblen). Fashion and new design trends come through the same stages. Here it is possible to present numerous examples. For instance, being fit and doing any kind of sport is popular and actual today. People go to gyms and try to lead a healthy way of life. On the other hand, the life has become very busy and requires maximum comfort from the clothes. Modern fashion proposes numerous directions of sports clothes. Such brand marks, as Reebok, Nike, Columbia, Adidas and many others present sports clothes for any choice. Their clothes are extremely popular among both grown-ups and teenagers.
Another example of technology appearance and changes in fashion that it has caused is the invention of wrist watches. These accessories are extremely popular and there are also a number of expensive exclusive brands which are targeted on rich businessmen, executives and other elite. There are numerous collections of brand watches today because they are still in use and are not dominated by any other type pf similar technology.
One more example of social development and fashion adaptation to it is numerous fashion collections for animals. As far as the practice of family pets has been spread among people, it has caused its consequences in modern fashion. Today there are special clothes collections for all breeds of cats and dogs. It has become a separate fashion industry.
As it was mentioned above Design Theory is closely connected with other disciplines and sciences and Psychology is among them. Psychological peculiarities make us so similar and so different. They condition admiration of particular things and people. Every person chooses style which is the most appropriate for him or her. It goes without saying that advertisement techniques also play a very important, sometimes even crucial role, in tastes and preferences formation.
In accordance with Design Theory there are some facts which influence changes in fashions and styles. Each generation has its own style which makes it different from all other generations. One of the reasons is the one of the psychological origin. Each generation believes in its exclusive and unique nature and tries to prove it through a new style and fashion. On the other had, these changes occur as an adopting process to the changing conditions of life. It may seem a paradox, but fashion looks for durability and comfort of the items proposed. It means that the practical fact also takes place. The next fact under consideration is the historical one. Style changes through history. Particular historical epoch requires particular fashion and style. Another fact, which is also important, is marketing. Consumption of fashionable items presumes the fact that it brings a lot of money to the producers of these items. Striving to make more money, designers create new collections and dictate changes in fashion.
What is more important, the new trend in style or fashion is strongly advertised today. Advertisement attracts a great variety of clients and makes the new item called-for on the modern market. It is interesting to find how many ideas considering fashion and style may be considered as own by people and how many are propagated by the advertisers. Advertisement serves as a strong tool nowadays and it is spread through different sources: the radio, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, local and international channels, etc. Modern advertisers use such sophisticated methods that it becomes difficult to find them. It often happens that the person starts following this or that trend accepting it as his or her own idea but in fact following advertised trends. The target group in the sphere of fashion advertising is teenagers. “Through television, magazines, movies, and teen idols, today’s youth are told what to wear to be “cool”. With today’s spending power becoming higher and higher, it is easy to see why companies use youth as their target market” (Hayward, 96).Teenagers come through the stage of personality formation and on this way social acceptance and popularity among other teenagers are very important. Fashionable trends have proven to be one of the ways to achieve this popularity.
The usage of brand names is also an effective method of advertising among teenagers. “Brand names serve as status symbols. To have Hilfiger or FUBU showing on your clothing is to be recognized as “cool”. And, while sporting these brand names, we are also endorsing that brand” (Hayward, 89). Brand names give teenager a feeling of superiority and high self-esteem. These facts show that most of the fashionable brands are dictated by designers and businessmen who are making money on fashion and style.
To sum up, design theory is a comparatively new discipline and its field of investigation is still the topic of heated debates. This theory validates Veblen’s theories, which explain a lot of historical and social phenomena and events. Design theory is an attempt to systemize all knowledge and facts about design, style, fashion, their correlation, appearance and development. This discipline is based on the fundamental basis of such fields, as Sciences, Humanities and Psychology. It allows to define its subject and correlation with other spheres of knowledge. Design theory gives definitions of good design and good taste and insists on their close correlation.
