Human Services Jobs is the economy’s part that grows very fast. What is the definition of the term “human services”? Actually, it is the same with the “social work” definition. In simple words, social work directed at the increasing quality of life. Social workers take care about the people who are suffering from different circumstances. For example, some volunteer organizations are taking care about the old people, or about the orphan children. Other organizations are taking care about drug-abused people or those who have AIDS. Different kinds of specialists are involved in the social work. Formally, social work is a kind of profession for people who are interested in other people destinies and at the same it is not only profession, but also academic discipline committed to the aspiration of social justice, to best quality of life, and to the development of the full potential of each person, group and even community in a society.
Social workers have a very special mission. They are called to solve social problems. You may think that all social workers are scientists or politician; they have science degrees. Partly it is true. But often ordinary people are doing this noble work. I watched some interview with people who are involved into human service. Some of them have a high school diploma. And some of them are just people with a great work experience and without highest education. Governments provide some programs to give a support to such kind of social workers. They try to attract many people to doing such kind of job. So, job opportunities should be excellent but unfortunately salaries of the social workers are still not very high.
Also human and social service assistances are doing a great deal of job. They help people to improve the quality of the life. There are community support workers, youth workers, client advocates among the human service assistance. They are providing their work under the guide of the professionals. Some of them have certain duties like running a home group.
They usually work under the direction of workers from different areas, like psychiatry, social work psychology, or nursery. The number of amenability and control they are given a different great deal. Some of them have not wide direct amenability. For example, they may run a group home. Others work under close direction.
Human workers explore clients’ problems and eligibility for benefits and services and help clients to get them. They also arrange for transportation, if necessary, and provide emotional support.
Also I want to tell some words about the work environment. Working conditions of social and human service assistants are different. Some of them have the work place in offices; some of them are working at clinics and hospitals. Other people work in group homes and shelters. And some social service assistance has day programs. Some of them should travel to see clients. Sometimes the work with the clients could be dangerous. Many agencies try to make sure that their work is not dangerous. Some of them work in the evening and during weekends.
I chose the interview with an administrator Karen Cowan. This woman started a residential treatment centre and therapeutic foster care for kids needing exceptionally intensive care. She cares about the children between 8 and 18 years. These children have suffered from their biological families and relatives. The task of this woman is to teach the kids how to get through the problems. Karen wants to show them how they suppose to act and how they could be able to move on life. The biological mums and dads never cared about the kids. So they need to feel that they are important persons for somebody. They should be touting how to trust adults again. These children have some problems in school because teachers sometimes do not understand exactly why the certain child cannot be excellent in subjects. Such children need the emotional support and understanding. People who are involved into helping the children suppose to have a lot of patient.
The typical day in the “Restored Hope” is the ordinary day of the ordinary family. The members of the community have a breakfast. They discuss something. They tell each other about what they want to do today and what they are not suppose to do… Then after having breakfast children go to school. They return from school and do their homework.
I think it is the most wide spread field of the human services. Many people love children. Kids often can’t help themselves to handle the betrayal of adults and especially the betrayal of their parents. Karen and other people who are similar to her understand that they are able to give the children love and care. So they are looking for a way of giving it. It is a common way to take care about children who suffered from their families to establish the house where the children live constantly. The owners of these houses are cooperating with many different specialists like doctors and psychologists. They understand that those kids need not just a family. They need a professional care also.
Where Karen get money for keeping her house? She uses her own money and from time to time she has some money from different philanthropists. Also government gives some material support. Karen says: “We just pray!”
I think I want to work at this field of human services because children are the most unprotected group of population. I love children so if I would be a social assistant I would like to help who were deprive of nice happy family.
