This work will be about a book “The Daughter of Time”. It is rather interesting for me to tell you my thoughts about this book and summarize its plot in such way. This book by famous author Josephine Tey impressed me and I’d like to dwell on some interesting moment during its description.
Every literary work has the bar. There are books, which describe beauty of nature, beauty of body, beauty of senses, and grandeur of spirit. But there are such works, main in which, for what they are loved and value, is beauty of thought, beauty and triumph of logic. The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey is such kind of books. In my opinion it s necessary to begin this work from the short description of author’s popularity, because due to this prominent writer was published The Daughter of Time and we can be pleasant readers of her prominent stories. The Daughter of Time was written by Josephine Tey. It is well-known fact that Josephine Tey is not a real writer’s name, but like a big amount of authors she decided to work under this pseudonym. Her real name was Elisabeth Makintosh (1876-1952). She is known as an author of great number of detective novels. Josephine Tey’s popularity grew from the book to book. She is not so famous like Agatha Christie, but many people have read her books and liked them.
The Daughter of Time is a kind of detective stories and it is also called a classic from the Golden Age mysteries. This genre is rather popular among different writers, but the author put forward her own ideas without insisting that they are fact and in such a way she encourages readers to do their own research and draw their own conclusions. I like her words about the history facts and their learning: “we will never learn the truth if we do not challenge the “facts” of history”.
In my opinion sometimes it is necessary not only to read book, but even read opinion of different people, because it helps to pay attention on different moments that were described by different readers, and you lost them during reading, concentrating on another details. I think that such way of reading has many advantages and in acknowledgement of my words I want to show you one example of such methods importance. Anonymous reader said that “Josephine Tey is often referred to as the mystery writer for people who don’t like mysteries. Her skills at character development and mood setting, and her tendency to focus on themes not usually touched upon by mystery writers, have earned her a vast and appreciative audience. In Daughter of Time, Tey focuses on the legend of Richard III, the evil hunchback of British history accused of murdering his young nephews. While at a London hospital recuperating from a fall, Inspector Alan Grant becomes fascinated by a portrait of King Richard. A student of human faces, Grant cannot believe that the man in the picture would kill his own nephews. With an American researcher’s help, Grant delves into his country’s history to discover just what kind of man Richard Plantagenet was and who really killed the little princes.”
The main character of the book is Alan Grant, detective of Scotland Yard, in pursuit after a next criminal failed in a hatch. Appearing on a hospital, he studies the portraits of people, in life of which there was a secret, and among them are killers of in anything guilty children, tyrant and despot – Richard III. One considers that it is a face of saint, other talk that it is a face of cripple. The third think that a great judge must such be. And the senior sister of hospital is convinced that it is a face of man which suffered much time. If to trust a portrait, Richard III do not looks like a killer. Then, if he did not killed the nephews, why did he enter in history as an ugly villain? And what actually did happen with princes? Answering on this question Alan Grant tried to find the secret and if you know British culture and interested in historical facts, this is a captivating read that offers an alternative to the idea that Richard III had his two young nephews murdered in order to protect his right to the throne.
We knew from the previous information that Alan Grant becomes interested with contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. He had such knowledge and his minds worked in different direction about this portrait and a question about this historical person was an obvious. “Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world’s most heinous villains – a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother’s children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England’s throne?” Detective decided to answer on this question, because he likes historical mysteries and he asked for a help people, who are also interested in this question. Brilliant detective tries to solve this problem with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower. It will not be a secret that two men who worked in the creative tandem (I mean Alan Grant and Brent Carradine) answered on this question and then Grant allow to the man Carradine write a story about this historical fact.
Summarizing all above mentioned it is possible to conclude that it is interesting detective story, but with not active actions, it is a kind of intellectual calm reading. I was impressed by the way how main character solved historical mystery and how he made his logical conclusions. I can recommend this book for all people who like detective stories and also I think that people who are interested in historical events also can read it with great pleasure.
