Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World is one of the popular books nowadays and, moreover, I can add that it was a New York Times Notable Book for 2003 and shown that it has a high position among the works of literature. I like this book and in my opinion it can be considered a non-fiction and biographical book by prominent American writer Tracy Kidder. I like through the body of this paper discuss its main interesting for me aspects and do it in specific details.
The title of the book was taken from an old Haitian proverb and I agree with the book’s author in his choice for the book title. This proverb “Mountains Beyond Mountains” or it also sounds “beyond mountains there are mountains” means that outside presentations of man there are yet more high things. The main actions took place in Haiti and that’s why the title has Haitian roots. The proverb Mountains Beyond Mountains has figurative sense and it is a wonderful metaphor for life’s challenges. The main character of the book Paul Farmer shows us it by an example of his own life and actions. Mountains in figurative sense and they are associated with new horizons and tops that should be the part of ordinary life for every person, in spite of activity and knowledge level. You know that at once you have scaled one mountain and then when you reach a place where you going for a long time you understand that there are a lot of other mountains around you and you can’t stop and should go there. You can see that there are always more mountains farther away: you will never stop climbing, never be finished.
Analyzing Farmer’s situation we see that this person was greatly involved in his work. In my opinion, every person should make own decision where to live, what to do and how to built relationships with people, who are around you today, exactly in this moment. You are free in your choice and every person choose own “mountain”, but not “mountain” choose the person to climbing on it. According to received information I can emphasize that in the case of Paul Farmer, whose visionary spirit (as you remember) is the subject of this book, his primary mountain is the struggle to help people, to do it in all corners of our world and to provide medical help to all desperately poor people. I strongly believe that even when you will come back home from somewhere, where you found your own mountains you will be missing them and thinking about their taming.
The book Mountains Beyond Mountains gives me three main lessons that can help me in my next activity. First of all it is necessary to mention that Paul Farmer found ways of connecting with people whose backgrounds are vastly different from his own and I think that methods of his communication should be adopted by me in future. Among these methods and Farmer’s lessons to me I can emphasize love to people and true wish to help them. And the third lesson I can say that it is a real possibility to choose own mountain and try to achieve its top by all possible and impossible ways.
Thus, based on all above discussed I want to conclude that I really changed my world’s perception and world’s vision after this book reading, because this book reminded me about charity and I understood that the world is based on old principles of love, peace and great wish to help people and be important for them. Doing is the better activity than thinking and in my opinion every person today should try to help people who need help and waiting for it without reminding, but from open and kind heart.
